Job Summary
The clinical haematology service in Southend is an effective team of 4.6 WTE haematologists. The team is supported by One Trainee Specialty Registrar (from HEE East of England) and four speciality doctors (three ST3 level and one IMT1 level). There are 3.4 WTE Haematology CNS's. The clinical service in Southend is predominantly malignant haematology, seeing a typical population of Lymphoma (100 new cases per annum), myeloma (26 cases per annum) as examples. There is the expected general haematology workload given our local catchment population of 380,000. There is a busy anticoagulant service (managed by pharmacists and nurses); Acute Leukaemia is managed in liaison with Barts Health NHS Trust and shared care is delivered when feasible.
Responsibilities
In-patient Duties
* Work as a member of the in-patient team (specialty doctors, junior doctors and consultants covering the wards).
* Be in charge of day‑to‑day in‑patient care, ensuring all patients are seen at least once daily or more often if clinically appropriate.
* Assess and manage patients attending the day‑care unit, seeking advice from more senior members of the medical staff as required.
* See referrals from other teams on the wards and coordinate with ward nurses, out‑patient staff and laboratories to ensure continuity of care.
* Perform bone marrow biopsy following appropriate training.
o Document all patient notes daily, writing and signing legibly.
o Prepare written communications for in‑patients (discharge summaries, referral letters, medical reports) and inform referring physicians within 24 hours of any new cancer diagnosis.
o Coordinate hand‑over to incoming staff in a face‑to‑face meeting, backed by written notes.
Outpatient Duties
li>Participate in supervised out‑patient clinics, reviewing referrals and attending regional MDT meetings.
* Prepare MDT proforma and attend regional MDT meetings as required.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
* MBBS or equivalent
* GMC Registration
* Previous experience within Haematology in a hospital environment
* Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Able to manage various IT systems and having appropriate IT skills
* Shows clear understanding of principles of clinical governance
* Interest and knowledge of medical audit and understanding of evidence‑based audit principles
Desirable
* MRCP part 1 or equivalent
* Experience of Haematology within the NHS
* Evidence of audit participation
