An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 ODP/ Nurse to join our Scrub team at Evelina Paediatric Theatres. We staff 7 operating theatres across Forest/Reef Theatres and Children’s Day Surgery Unit (CDSU). Specialities include Paediatric Spinal, Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, Robotics (Urology), General Surgery, ENT, Otology, Plastics, Cleft, Rheumatology, Endoscopy, Ophthalmology, Emergency, Thoracic and many more. We also assist in cases done in Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and in the Birthing Unit/ Centre.

This vacancy is open for candidates with existing perioperative background. Someone who is trustworthy, diligent, excellent in timekeeping and flexible to work in the different areas across the Trust requiring paediatric scrub support.

Aspiring candidates should be able to do various shift pattern to cover 24 hour service, including on-calls and weekends. The job will also involves rotation from Main Forest/ Reef theatres and Children's Day Surgery Unit (CDSU).

Main duties of the job

You will need to be an experienced Scrub Practitioner who is an excellent practitioner in promoting high standards of care and has a vision for service improvement. You will actively support your Line Manager and colleagues in delivering high quality care to patients during their Peri-operative journey. You are expected to have a strong clinical background, leadership and management skills.

Working for our organisation

At Evelina London, our paediatric theatres are central to specialist surgical care. We operate seven inpatient and two day case theatres, each with dedicated recovery units, supporting a wide range of specialities including ENT, Orthopaedics, Spine, Plastics, Urology, General Surgery, Dental, Ophthalmology and Robotic Surgery. Our team also supports procedures in MRI, Interventional Radiology, Cath Lab, PET Scan, and occasionally adult theatres for paediatric cardiac and ophthalmology cases.

Despite being spread across the hospital, our theatre staff work as one cohesive team, rotating across all areas. This fosters strong multidisciplinary collaboration and enables staff to develop specialist skills and grow professionally.

We are supported by dedicated clinical educators who deliver structured training and development. The Trust promotes flexible working and upskilling programmes, helping staff gain competencies across perioperative specialities. These efforts contribute to high staff retention and a culture of continuous improvement.

Evelina London also collaborates with other NHS trusts, creating opportunities for innovation and service expansion. We are preparing to launch the Children's Cancer Service - a transformative project enhancing our paediatric oncology expertise. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To provide expert and efficient support to the Surgeons and other members of the surgical team during surgery/ other procedures.
2. To be knowledgeable and trained in the different surgical specialist equipment available and ensure that they are in good working condition.
3. Independently manage a group of patients within the speciality whilst working as part of the MDT, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care.
4. Demonstrate appropriate practice and adherence to Trust standards, values and behaviours and policies in fulfilling patient care.
5. Be responsible for recognising and responding to emergencies in the speciality. To interpret information and take appropriate action and to lead others to do the same.
6. Ensure that patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.
7. To provide excellent aseptic technique whilst scrubbing and promotes good Infection Prevention and Control.
8. Is wholly accountable for his / her practice in line with the NMC/HCPC code of professional conduct and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his / her knowledge and professional competence.
9. Ensure accurate Epic documentation of each patient episode and knowledge in the use of Epic workflows in carrying out the different tasks required for patient care are being demonstrated.
10. Maintain accurate records of the clinical service and ensuring that confidentiality of information is adhered to. Ensure that sensitive patient records are stored appropriately.
11. Ensure staff take precautions to minimise the risk of cross infection in relation to the safe disposal of body fluids (including blood).
12. To be an effective communicator with patients/carers/families regarding disease treatment and management. To create an environment that fosters good communication between patient and health care professionals, that meets individual’s needs.
13. To have situational awareness to identify and intervene where circumstances contribute to an unsafe environment for patients and staff. To bring instances to the attention of the Sister/Charge Nurse for the area.
14. Ensure that the learning environment and specialist training is appropriate for both pre and post registration learners and participate in the development of appropriate programmes.
15. Contribute in the Trust’s clinical supervision programme for staff.
16. To assist the Sister/Charge Nurse in developing a culture that is challenging, stimulating, rewarding and supportive.
17. To act as mentor/assessor to unqualified staff and to provide education, advice and support to a team of nurses.
18. Utilise research findings in the delivery of specialist patient care, developing new ways of working and to disseminate relevant information to staff.
19. Organise own work and manage own caseload and practice, identifying and maintaining supportive networks for self and other staff members.
20. Take an active role in clinical governance, risk assessment, supporting implementation of strategies to minimise risk. Ensuring incidents and near misses are reported, through promoting a no blame culture.
