The SEN Teacher Job
A large special needs (SEN) school based in Camden, North London is seeking an SEN teacher with some recent ASD and SLD experience to join their team in September for a Key Stage 3 class of 8 pupils. Ideally the successful SEN Teacher applicant will have a proven track record working in an SEN environment but the Headteacher will consider a mainstream teacher with the passion and interest in becoming an SEN teacher. The job will initially be a 12 month assignment with a permanent contract on offer if desired by both parties at the end of the academic year.
The School/Class
The successful SEN Teacher applicant will be teaching a mixed KS3 class (8 pupils) with Autism and Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD.) Pupils have speech language and communication needs as well as additional sensory needs. The majority of the students have additional physical impairments. The class consists of 8 pupils who are all working at low levels, as a result experience of the EYFS curriculum would be advantageous, though not essential.
Much of the work you would be doing will be based loosely on the Early Years curriculum with a particular focus on developing social and communication skills. You will be line managing 3 highly skilled, supportive, and energetic TAs who have been hand picked to ensure a smooth transition for a new member of staff. The TA team are really friendly and they know the pupils and school procedures very well and they are experienced at helping get new teachers up to speed quickly. Some experience of PECS and makaton would be advantageous but training is available.
This is a really good class as the SLT have moved staff around for September to ensure that new teachers are given a "soft landing" if this is their first introduction to an SEN school environment. The pupils don't present with challenging behaviours, they are all well engaged with their learning and bring a positive energy to their learning. The makeup of the class and the excellent staff allocated alongside the existing systems and strategies in place make this an ideal opportunity for a skilled teacher seeking to move into an SEN teacher position or for an experienced SEN teacher who wants a good work/life balance in an outstanding environment.
The Successful SEN Teacher Applicant
The successful SEN Teacher candidate will be flexible, with the ability to use their own initiative where required. Experience working in an SEN school or with ASD and SLD children would be an advantage due to the challenges of the class however excellent training is available. They would be more than happy to support an excellent practitioner with passion for SEN but limited SEN experience.
Progress with these pupils can be slow when compared to their contemporaries so patience, a caring nature, passion for the job and strong self belief will be essential.
SEN Teacher Benefits
* Excellent central location in Camden
* Outstanding school
* Excellent transport links
* Small classes
* Moderate paperwork
* Good work/life balance
* Great rates of pay
* Supportive SLT
* Experienced and friendly TA Team
* Structured and comprehensive handover
