Anglian Learning are seeking to appoint an outstanding and ambitious teacher and leader as Head of English to join our successful team at Joyce Frankland Academy in September 2026. This is a key appointment for the Academy and the successful candidate will be an influential leader, building on the current strong performance, setting out an exciting vision for the future, developing colleagues to reach their full potential and ensuring the department is recognised locally and regionally for the quality of its provision and the achievement of pupils. The successful candidate will bring warmth, compassion and kindness as a leader, making ethical decisions for the benefit of all. He or she will also bring rigour, forensic insight, and a highly developed understanding of what makes an outstanding department.
About the Role
As Head of English, you will provide strong leadership and direction to the department, ensuring a rich, challenging curriculum that inspires a lifelong love of English. You will play a key role in shaping whole-school priorities while championing outstanding outcomes for all students.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the development and delivery of an ambitious, inclusive English curriculum
* Drive high standards of teaching, learning, and assessment across the department
* Monitor student progress and implement targeted intervention strategies
* Ensure excellent outcomes at GCSE and beyond for all learners
* Contribute to whole-school improvement at a strategic level
* Lead self-evaluation, quality assurance, and departmental development planning
* Use data effectively to raise attainment and close achievement gaps
Staff Development
* Inspire, lead, and develop a high-performing English team
* Support staff wellbeing while promoting a collaborative, high-expectations culture
* Lead recruitment, training, and performance management
* Promote a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment
* Support students’ social, moral, spiritual, and cultural development (SMSC)
* Uphold safeguarding and behaviour policies to the highest standards
Resource & Operational Management
* Manage departmental budget and resources effectively
* Ensure learning environments are stimulating and well-maintained
Person Specification
* Qualified Teacher Status (PGCE or equivalent)
* Proven experience teaching English to GCSE level
* Strong track record of raising attainment and leading improvement
* Experience of leading and developing staff
* Master’s degree or higher
