Job Description:

Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity to recruit a full-time Trainee Assistant Practitioner to join our Integrated Stroke Rehabilitation Therapies Team. The position offers the chance to complete a Foundation Degree Assistant Practitioner via an apprenticeship route. Upon successful completion of the 2-year course, you will move into a band 4 position.

We seek a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate, preferably with prior experience in a rehabilitation setting, who has studied to NVQ level 3 in health and social care or an equivalent academic level, and is competent in IT systems.

You will work across the stroke therapies pathway supporting Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Speech and Language Therapists treating patients on the acute stroke unit at Blackburn Hospital, inpatient stroke rehab, and the community stroke team based at Pendle Community Hospital. A driver is essential.

The apprenticeship is a 2-year academic program including work-based learning in partnership with UCLAN. Applicants will attend university one day per week and undertake up to 20 hours of additional study per week in their own time.

Qualified Assistant Practitioners are encouraged to apply as well.

For further information, contact Gemma Gumbley, Operational Lead for Stroke & Neuro Rehabilitation Therapies, at 07944190780.

Main duties of the job

As an Assistant Practitioner/Trainee Assistant Practitioner, you will assist in delivering specialist therapy across East Lancashire, supporting qualified therapists in assessing and treating stroke patients.

You will undertake highly skilled support work supervised by a member of the Stroke Rehabilitation Therapy Team, including gathering assessment information, implementing treatment programs, and recommending equipment and minor adaptations.

You will employ technical and creative skills in providing therapeutic activities, evaluating and modifying treatment plans with guidance from therapists.

You will manage your own caseload within a broad framework set by a qualified therapist.

The work environment includes inpatient stroke units, care homes, and patients' homes, with potential lone working in the community.

The working hours are 08:30 to 16:30, currently over 6 days a week including bank holidays, with future plans to extend to 7 days. Flexibility to change base according to service needs is required.

Working for our organisation

Established in 2003, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) is a large healthcare provider delivering high-quality acute secondary care to East Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen.

Our vision is to be recognized for providing safe, personal, and effective care. We treat over 700,000 patients annually and employ over 8,000 staff, many of whom are internationally renowned and award-winning.

Our stroke rehabilitation team is based at Pendle Community Hospital and Royal Blackburn Hospital, with a community team visiting various clinical settings. We have strong links with UCLAN, employing an AHP Professor in neurorehabilitation and stroke, and are involved in research projects.

We provide robust supervision, annual appraisals, and in-house training to support staff development. Each trainee has an assigned mentor for additional training during the two-year foundation degree program.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Organize and deliver therapy interventions as screened and delegated by a qualified therapist, following stroke rehabilitation pathways.

Use technical and therapeutic skills to promote patient independence and support the delivery of group or virtual therapy sessions.

Support administrative tasks such as collecting patient information, completing referrals, and ordering equipment, under the supervision of therapists.

Formulate treatment goals with patients and support their achievement through therapy interventions.
