Overview

Job Summary

The post holder will deliver a high quality, comprehensive mental health service for children and young people with serious and enduring mental health difficulties. The role involves managing a defined caseload with a focus on working with children and young people and their families who experience a complex range of needs and difficulties. Acting as a key member of the multi-disciplinary team, the post holder will provide assessment, psychosocial, evidence-based interventions using a collaborative approach and will be skilled at risk assessment and management. They will complement the multi-disciplinary working of the team, providing supervision for other team members, as agreed with the Team Lead. They will participate in team and service development and evaluation. Liaison, advice and consultation with a wide range of agencies is central to the role.

Main duties of the job

* Take responsibility for the management of a complex caseload, which includes specialist assessment (within service specification), and care planning in conjunction with service user and carer, evaluation of individual treatment plans for CYP with mental health needs.
* Responsible for participating in the setting of quality standards, including the auditing, monitoring and reviewing of practice in line with current clinical guidance practice and policy.
* Assess patient\'s individual care needs, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care.
* Deliver a range of interventions in accordance with the agreed plan of care and Pathway guidance.
* Complete and contribute to robust risk assessments and risk management plans. Deliver and promote positive risk taking, where appropriate, to improve quality of life and maximise occupational performance/independence.
* Maintain an effective reporting system by observing and reporting verbally and in writing on patient conditions.
* Encourage and support service user and carer involvement and participation.
* Attend and contribute to CAMHS Multi-disciplinary team, business and development forums.
* Utilise agreed outcome measures to review the effectiveness of interventions, as part of the care planning and evaluation process. Assist in ensuring that the aims and objectives of the service are fulfilled and to identify factors which may inhibit these from being achieved.

Job responsibilities

* Main duties and responsibilities include those stated above under Main duties of the job, plus the following: participate in the current Duty rota; display effective networking skills; maintain up-to-date professional competence; work within Code of Practice and professional guidelines; participate in the Multi-disciplinary team forums.


Research and service development

* Identify issues relevant to the needs of people and carers; reflect these in service planning and development.
* Develop health promotion activities and ensure preventative approaches are used to maintain independence.
* Engage in clinical governance initiatives, audits, supervision, and bring evidence and research into practice.


Human resources and training

* Supervise junior staff as required; provide clinical advice and supervision; participate in recruitment and induction where required.
* Provide a learning environment for students and support staff in developing competence.


Systems and equipment

* Maintain timely data collection using systems such as daily diaries, Safeguard, ensuring confidentiality is maintained.
* Work with other service providers to access equipment and opportunities for service users.


Decisions and judgments

* Facilitate discharge or transition to other services where appropriate; ensure practice is evidence-based; be available for supervision; implement and review Trust policies.


Communication and relationships

* Communicate sensitive information effectively; establish therapeutic relationships; keep team and carers informed about changes; liaise with local authorities and third sector agencies.


General

* Promote carer and service user involvement; participate in appraisal and development; utilise resources to ensure quality care and report incidents; access supervision.


Physical demands

* Occasional restricted sitting; travel between settings; light lifting and moving equipment; travel between environments.


Most challenging parts of the job

* Concentrating during assessments while addressing interruptions; exposure to emotional/distressing circumstances and potential incidents of aggression; engaging with difficult-to-engage clients; flexible and reactive scheduling; lone working considerations; crisis management by various channels.


Person Specification

Essential

Qualifications and Training

* Core profession qualification relevant to children\'s mental health / social care: First level professional Registered Nurse, Social worker, Clinical or Counselling Psychologist, Art Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Family Therapist, CYP Trained CBT Therapist or Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist or equivalent with demonstrable knowledge and continuous post-qualified experience.
* Professional registration with HCPC, NMC or equivalent.

Desirable

* Psychological intervention qualification (e.g., EMDR, CBT, CBTp, Family Interventions, CAT, DBT);
* Registered practice assessor/supervisor.

Experience

Essential

* Experience of working with CYP who have difficulty engaging with services and have complex mental health needs.
* Experience of assessing, planning, coordinating and managing CYP with mental health problems in a community setting.
* Desirable — Experience of working in a CAMHS, crisis or community setting; experience with clients at risk of admission.
