Senior Orthopaedic and MSK Physiotherapist

We are growing our team! Spencer Private Hospitals (SPH) are looking for a HCPC registered Chartered Senior Physiotherapist to enhance the current team. The role is 1 year fixed term with the possibility of extending.

They will work at QEQM Margate with occasional work at Kent and Canterbury and William Harvery Hospital with a case load of pre and post-op orthopaedic inpatients and post -op follow-up outpatients. This role needs a physiotherapist comfortable and competent to work mainly with the support of the physiotherapy team and wider MDT but occassionally unsupervised onsite - again with the support of the wider MDT.

Clinical support and supervision, development and ongoing upskilling is provided as part of the physiotherapy department based at QEQM Spencer Margate.

Skilled at orthopedic surgical cases and outpatients MSK patients, they will also need to be familiar with a multiplicity of surgical procedures which include but are not limited to general surgical, orthopedic, gynaecology, urology, ENT and colorectal post operative patients.

An enthusiastic, flexible Senior Physio is required who has access to their own vehicle.

Main duties of the job

To work across the Spencer PrivateHospital (SPH) sites as a physiotherapist responsible for providing a highstandard of assessment, diagnosis, evaluation, treatment and advice to patientswithin inpatient and outpatient physiotherapy service. This post is mainlybased at Margate, with occasional travel to Canterbury and Ashford.

Job responsibilities

KEY RELATIONSHIPS

LineManager is the Clinical Specialist Orthopaedic/MSKPhysiotherapist

Workin close relationship with other members of the MDT on the ward and inoutpatients as the expert physiotherapist, educating other members of the MDTregarding therapeutic needs of orthopaedic patients.

Workin close relationship with Customer Experience Officer, Nursing Staff, GeneralPractitioners (GP), Consultants and other Allied Health Professionals (AHP)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

To undertake a comprehensiveassessment and formulate an expert diagnosis of patients who may have complexconditions including multi pathology. Use well developed clinical reasoning ofthe patients needs. This will involve seeking and sharing personal andpotentially sensitive information with the patient and sharing expert advicewith the wider MDT regarding patient needs.

To work as an autonomouspractitioner taking responsibility for the management of patients on owncaseload without direct supervision.

To evaluate clinical practicethrough reflection, audit and outcome measures, individually, locally or withinspecialist interest groups in order to continually improve physiotherapyservice to patients and promote evidence-based practice.

Maintain patient documentation,records and accurate statistical information to reflect care provided and tomeet professional standards and hospital policies.

To undertake clinical audit andevaluate outcome measures in order to continually improve the service topatients.

To work as an autonomousprofessional according to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy rules ofprofessional conduct and standards of physiotherapy and health professionscouncils registration.

To ensure the patient understandsand agrees to the treatment plan giving consent to it. This will involvenegotiation and motivation skills.

To produce clear written informationand exercise programmes for patients to follow at home or when not with aphysiotherapist.

To use advanced clinical reasoningskills to review and evaluate patient progress and their current condition ateach treatment session and to amend the treatment programme as appropriate toachieve agreed goals.

To plan and undertake discharge ofpatients from physiotherapy when agreed goals of treatment have been achievedand sending discharge reports to GPs and Consultants.

To manage the provision of equipmentfor patients to take home when discharged from the ward as necessary (raisedtoilet seats, perching stools etc) and ensure a stock of such items is keptwithin the department to facilitate patient discharge in a timely manner. Toinform the physio manager when stocks are running low and to re-order necessarystock to ensure optimal patient treatment.

To ensure education, includingwritten information is given to patients regarding all ADL prior to discharge,ensuring rehabilitation meets all patients needs.

To be able to correctly identifyinappropriate referrals to physiotherapy and have the confidence and clinicalexpertise to refer on or back as required.

To produce timely and accuratepatients record and reports in accordance with Health Profession Council andChartered Society of Physiotherapy regulations.

Financial

Toensure all patients are seen in the allocated time on the ward and outpatient andunits of treatment recorded and shared with the appropriate departments in atimely manner.

Toensure that the physiotherapy department resources, equipment and appliancesare used efficiently and economically.

Tomanage equipment stocks for patients and the ordering of equipment.

Toensure daily electronic charge sheets are completed with accuracy and sharedwith the finance teams, ensuring all equipment given out to patients isrecorded.

Business Development

Toactively participate with the organisation of the physiotherapy marketingstrategy.

Toparticipate in advertisement of new equipment and services of the department.

Totake active part in implementation of change required to grow departmental andbusiness activities of physiotherapy service.

Tocontribute to service development and change through liaison with physiotherapy line managers.

Quality

Toactively participate in service improvement initiatives such as in plannedresearch and audit.

Toparticipate in performance development discussion with the line managers and todevelop goals and objectives of development plan.

Toregularly assist in the planning & delivery of departmental training andeducation sessions, to further professional and personal development for staff,working with the guidance and support of the physiotherapy line managers.

Tocontinue to develop specialist clinical skills, knowledge and experiencethrough practice in a range of clinical settings which will include inpatientareas and outpatient post-op follow-up, manual therapy, and acupuncture andspecialist personal development as identified in personal developmentdiscussion.

Towork consistently and contribute to quality against expected standards andevidence, while assessing and managing risk to quality in own dailyphysiotherapy practice.

Identifygaps to service to the physiotherapy line managers.

Willbe required to participate in forward planning and participate in inpatientweekend work.

Tobe responsible for all aspects of safety relating to equipment used. To beresponsible for monthly equipment checks and/or teaching competency of nursesand non qualified staff (including non-physiotherapy staff) in using equipmentfor example appliances and electrotherapy items etc.

To educate other members of the MDT regarding preand post-operative education and advice, through formalised teaching sessions.

Tocomply with all local and hospital policies and procedures and legalrequirement relating to clinical care and health and safety of self andvisitors.

InfectionControl

Toundertake all mandatory and essential training in Infection Prevention andControl.

Tofamiliarise themselves with and adhere to current Infection Prevention andControl policies relevant to them and their area of work.

Totake responsibility to ensure the workplace is kept clean and tidy so that itis safe for all other users of that area.

Tocommunicate any identified infection risks to the Infection Prevention andControl leads and where appropriate report any Healthcare Associated Infectionsin line with SPHs Incident Reporting Policy

Health and Safety

Youmust co-operate with management in discharging its responsibilities under theHealth and Safety at Work Act 1974 and take reasonable health and safetyprecautions for yourself and others and ensure the agreed safety procedures arecarried out to maintain a safe environment for patients, employees andvisitors.

To ensure all health and safety audits carried out in accordancewith the planned programme and all follow up actions carried out within duetimetable.

Responsiblefor the most economical and safe use of all equipment and materials, ensuringit meets Health and Safety standards, is kept in good repair and servicedregularly, carrying out regular checks on usage and availability

SPHs committed to reducing its impact on the environment by preventing pollution,continually improving its environmental performance which increases thewellbeing of staff and clients. As a member of staff, you are expected toadhere to policies to assist SPHs in meeting its environmental andsustainability target.

Workforce

Towork as part of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) in the provision of a high standardof care to the patients in the acute inpatient and outpatient physiotherapyservice, to ensure the continuation of therapy on transfer or discharge asnecessary.

Tomaintain effective communication links with patients, carers and all othermembers of the MDT regarding patients condition, including the completion ofaccurate clinical records in line with the hospital, CSP and health professionscouncil code of practice.

Toassist the physiotherapy line managers with coordination and provision ofphysiotherapy inpatient and outpatient services.

Responsiblefor communication of complex, sensitive information to all levels oftrained/untrained staff, clients and their families and carers.

Tobe confident in their own diagnosis and able to communicate that to othersincluding MDT, Consultants, GPs and other AHP

Technologyand Administrative Duties

Useof computer software/hardware to input and analyse data/documents asappropriate e.g. audit tools, incident reporting, spreadsheets, orderingsystems etc

Toensure all charge sheets are completed accurately on a daily basis andforwarded to the physiotherapy line managers and the finance team.

Toensure all patients needing onward referral to physiotherapy post dischargefrom the inpatient setting are referred to physiotherapy on the day ofdischarge, attaching the post-operative notes when necessary to ensure theclinical safety of the patient in ongoing post-discharge physiotherapy.

To ensurethat referral letters are compiled on the first day a patient is seen.
