Job Introduction
As Sustainability Lead (City), you’ll lead efforts to address the 96% of emissions in Milton Keynes that are beyond the city council’s direct control.
This role is part of our Economic Development service, responsible for Invest Milton Keynes, the city’s sustainability agenda, regional collaborations, and smart city initiatives. The department manages external relationships and initiatives across Milton Keynes and is based at our Civic offices.
Current projects include participation in the EU's Net Zero Cities programme and collaboration with Santander UK on the Tomorrow's Homes programme.
The role involves creating strategic partnerships with businesses, educational institutions, community groups, and citizens to promote sustainability goals.
This is a site-based role.
Interviews are scheduled for 19 and 27 June.

Main Responsibilities
1. Strategic leadership: Lead the delivery of the Milton Keynes Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan, from inception to completion.
2. Partnership building: Develop and secure external partnerships with businesses, schools, and community groups to achieve climate goals. Collaborate with the Council’s Sustainability Lead to build capacity and understanding within the organization.
3. Programme management: Oversee city-focused projects like the Net Zero MK programme and engagement initiatives.
4. Funding generation: Identify and secure external funding to support sustainability initiatives.
5. Communication and engagement: Enhance communication with citizens and businesses via web and social media channels.
The Ideal Candidate
* Expertise in sustainability with significant experience in a relevant role.
* Degree or higher in sustainability or related environmental fields.
* Strong interpersonal skills and confidence in influencing external partners.
* Good communication and engagement skills.
* Experience in project management and securing external funding.
* Understanding of local authority sustainability issues.
* Ability to prioritize, manage complex issues, and work proactively.

Work Arrangement
Roles are designated as ‘site based’ (up to two days remote work) or ‘home based’ (four days remote). Managers assign roles based on service needs.
