The role will include providing specialist advice on antimicrobials, reviewing antibiotic prescribing and working with regional antimicrobial pharmacists.This split role will also provide the opportunity for the successful applicant's clinical pharmacy career to develop, continuing to work as a Clinical Pharmacist.To be successful in this post, the candidate will be of a continuous improvement mindset; be innovative and passionate about improving antimicrobial stewardship; be able to implement change; and demonstrate commitment to self-development and the development of others.
Main duties of the job
To work closely with the Consultant Microbiology team, the Infection Prevention team and the Pharmacy team to offer a leadership role to the good antimicrobial stewardship agenda across Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust.
To provide highly specialist advice and service delivery in antimicrobial management to patients, prescribers and other staff, ensuring services are delivered to agreed standards.
To evaluate antimicrobial prescribing and report exception and assurance to the relevant Trust groups and committees
To be an active member of the regional Antimicrobial group and share good practice
To be a Clinical Pharmacist within the Clinical Pharmacy team.

Main Purpose of the Job To be the named Pharmacy representative responsible within the organisation for ensuring that antimicrobial use is rational, economic and reflects local and national policies and guidelines. To provide highly specialist advice and information on the safe and rational use of antimicrobials and to promote good antimicrobial stewardship practice across Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. To be a Clinical Pharmacist within the Clinical Pharmacy team.
Key DutiesLead Antimicrobial Pharmacist To work closely with the Consultant Microbiology team, the Infection Prevention team and the Pharmacy team to offer a leadership role to the good antimicrobial stewardship agenda across the organisation. To provide highly specialist advice and service delivery in antimicrobial management to patients, prescribers and other staff, ensuring services are delivered to agreed standards. To be the Pharmacy lead for organisational guidelines and policies on the management of infections and appropriate use of antimicrobial drugs that are in line with current best practice, are evidence based and reflect local trends in antimicrobial resistance or known sensitivities of organisms. To be the Pharmacy lead for PGDs and PSDs relating to antimicrobials. To analyse, interpret and evaluate complex antimicrobial prescribing information within the organisation, using clinical and professional judgement and take appropriate action to reduce any inappropriate prescribing and variance. To report exception and assurance to relevant Trust groups and committees including the Antimicrobial Management Group, Medicines Governance Group and Pharmacy Governance and Assurance (GAP) meetings To plan, organise and implement clinical medication management initiatives to improve patient safety and maximise the prudent use of antimicrobials To promote, monitor and challenge where necessary compliance with the Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust Formulary and antimicrobial guidelines To co-ordinate and provide regular education and training events relating to antimicrobials for medical, nursing and pharmacy staff To network with other Lead Antimicrobial Pharmacists at a regional and national level to develop and share best practice To contribute to the effective delivery of the annual influenza vaccination programme as part of the Trust Vaccination Committee To communicate antimicrobial related information to prescribers, other professional staff, patients and carers. Some patients may have language difficulties, physical or mental disabilities To monitor adherence to regulatory, financial and advisory frameworks, proposing and implementing changes and direction as required and advising on the access, safe storage and utilisation of antimicrobials To negotiate with colleagues on the ward and in the Pharmacy team regarding antibiotic issues in order to achieve desired outcomes for an individual patient, a ward or speciality, inter-departmental communication on medication priorities will be an essential skill To plan and organise on a daily basis, and co-ordinate with other Pharmacy team leaders, that the antimicrobial requirements of patients are met in a timely manner To support the Trusts patient safety groups and forums in the investigation and analysis of medication errors relating to antimicrobials, helping to formulate recommendations to prevent future similar events. To plan and undertake audits and projects to monitor and improve the safety and effectiveness of the use of antimicrobials To support in the Trust response to medicines shortages through assessing the impact and supporting safe implementation of alternatives To ensure strong governance is in place for all pathways involving antimicrobials

Person Specification
Knowledge
* Master's Degree in Pharmacy
* Registered with the UK General Pharmaceutical Council
* Post graduate clinical pharmacy training
Experience
* Qualified Pharmacist with significant post graduate clinical pharmacy experience
* Evidence of CPD
