Job overview
An enthusiastic, resilient, and change‑embracing NHS nurse leading the 0‑19 Healthy Child Programme within the North Locality School Nursing team. The School Nurse promotes good health, prevents ill health, and works with young people, families, schools, and community partners.
Main duties and responsibilities
* Lead a multidisciplinary team to identify and address health needs of children, young people, and the school community.
* Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individual care plans; manage children with complex health needs within the school setting.
* Operate the 5‑19 duty desk: receive referrals, liaise with key stakeholders, parents/carers, and young people.
* Assist schools with medicine management procedures.
* Provide and promote appointment clinics, parent/carer support groups, home visits, and health needs assessments.
* Respond to health‑needs assessments with referrals to GP, consultants, mental health teams, social care, and other agencies.
* Support children with emotional and behavioural development and deliver health promotion programmes.
* Act as a health link for other agencies and partner with Education, Welfare, OCYPs, voluntary services, and private agencies.
* Work with the Locality Lead on safeguarding for vulnerable or at‑risk children and participate in child‑protection case conferences.
* Participate in statutory safeguarding processes, including witness statements, court reports, and court attendance.
* Identify children with special educational needs and disability; facilitate support and referrals.
* Clinically triage the single point of access and Chat Health as required.
* Provide cover for colleagues when requested.
* Demonstrate reflective, evidence‑based practice and influence strategy and policy development.
* Support other staff within the locality and contribute to local policy development.
Person specification – Qualifications & Training
* Registered Nurse with UK NMC (RGN/RMN/RSCN/RN‑LD).
* Mentor 998 level or equivalent teaching qualification.
* Recognised leadership course.
* Evidence of completion of migratory portfolio to demonstrate dual qualification or willingness to work towards it.
Experience
* Experience with children and their families.
* Experience of working in the community.
* Experience of working in a multidisciplinary setting.
* Experience of safeguarding children and families.
* Experience of mentoring/supporting colleagues.
* Leadership and management of staff.
Knowledge & Skills
* High level of clinical skills, with the ability to identify, respond to, and evaluate health needs.

* Current knowledge of local and national policies informing public health practice.
* Evidence of partnership working in the community.
* Good keyboard skills and understanding of clinical systems.
* Evidence of contribution to service redesign/development.
* Audit and data analysis skills.
