Senior housekeeper

Summary of role

To provide a comprehensive cleaning service to include dusting, vacuuming, washing floors, emptying bins, cleaning toilets, and laundry to ensure a clean, safe, and hygienic environment is provided for the home's residents, staff, and visitors at all times.

To oversee and ensure all aspects of the laundry service are maintained to the highest possible standards and residents' satisfaction.

To supervise a team of Housekeepers ensuring they know their duties and carry out their work in accordance with Foundation and/or local procedures and practices and health and safety regulations to ensure a high standard of cleanliness, infection control and hygiene are maintained in a safe, timely and efficient manner. In addition, the postholder is responsible for fostering a positive and collaborative team culture that aligns with the values of the care home.

Key areas of responsibility

1. Operational

1.1 Manage staff rotas to ensure adequate coverage across all shifts.

1.2 Allocate cleaning tasks to available housekeepers against an allocated schedule and specification and check work is carried out to a high standard and regularly maintained.

1.3 Maintain adequate supplies of cleaning laundry materials and other supplies, re-ordering when needed, ensuring other cleaners have the supplies they require to meet the home's needs.

1.4 Undertake, during key times in the year, a complete 'spring' clean of all areas including internal window cleaning, moving furniture to clean behind it, skirting boards, etc., to ensure all areas are clean and fresh.

1.5 Awareness of, and adherence to, current health and safety legislation and approved codes of practice as communicated by the home manager or their deputy.

1.6 Communicate the safe use of cleaning products, equipment, and machinery to housekeeping and laundry assistants.

1.7 Oversee the cleanliness and serviceability of cleaning equipment and facilities.

1.8 Laise with the Home Manager regarding maintenance issues and improvements.

1. Housekeeping

2.1 Undertake all aspects of floor cleaning, vacuuming carpet, shampooing, hard floor mopping, dusting, polishing.

2.2 Ensure resident and staff areas are left in a tidy and hygienic condition.

2.3 Ensure all cleaning equipment is in safe and hygienic condition.

2.4 Clean and sanitise washrooms, toilets, changing rooms and work rooms.

2.5 Undertake all other aspects of cleaning, wall washing, upholstery cleaning as required.

2.6 Ensure cleaning stores are clean and tidy.

2.7 Collect laundry from residents' rooms daily.

2.8 Check all personal laundry into / from laundry on correct service user's laundry sheet.

2.9 Launder all bed linen and personal laundry to Whitgift House standards.

2.10 Rotary or hand iron all bed linen and store neatly and hand iron all personal laundry.

2.11 Ensure efficient running of the laundry at all times.

2.12 Clean the laundry areas and empty the fluff compartment of the Tumble Dryer daily and to ensure the laundry areas are kept clean and tidy at all times.

2.13 Clean the laundry sink daily and descale weekly.

2.14 Clean, polish and damp dust all machines daily.

2.15 Address any defects in fabrics, furnishings and equipment and escalate to the Home Manager where required.

1. Key tasks

3.1 Ensure that cleaning is performed using only approved products and equipment supplied by the Foundation

3.2 Be familiar with the safe use of approved cleaning products and equipment

3.3 Undergo 'on the job' and/or formal cleaning supervision training and development

3.4 Maintain a written record of cleaning materials stocks and replenish when stock levels are low

3.5 Familiarisation with the Foundation's health and safety policies and ensure staff are always working within these

3.6 Keep knowledge up to date, as necessary, to receive updates and amendments to health and safety, infection control and hygiene policy as it affects housekeeping assistants

3.7 Participate in an annual performance management review (PMR) and ensure regular supervision of housekeepers

3.8 Ensure serviceability checks of cleaning equipment are carried out by housekeeping assistants and that identified faults are reported

3.9 Report any defects to a senior member of staff to ensure health and safety procedures are followed and to enable repairs to be carried out

3.10 Ensure all equipment is cleaned and returned to store by housekeeping assistants upon completion of each cleaning task

3.11 Ensure all maintenance and equipment related queries are acted upon

3.12 Induct housekeeping assistants with appropriate training in the operation of cleaning machinery, such as vacuum cleaners, scrubbers etc., and in safe systems of work

3.13 Ensure risk assessments are conducted for all cleaning/housekeeping operations

3.14 Ensure housekeeping assistants' awareness of any relevant risk assessments, material safety data sheets and or training required in advance of undertaking any cleaning task

3.15 Be familiar with the contents and requirements of the housekeeping assistants' job description and ensure staff are meeting the requirements.

3.16 Support insurance audits and carry out services of equipment

3.17 Ensure all COSHH sheets are updated monthly

1. Health and safety

4.1 As an employee the post holder has a duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to:

* Take responsible care of the health and safety of themselves and all other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work

* Cooperate with their employer to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and the health and safety policies and procedures of the home, not intentionally or recklessly interfere with, or misuse, anything provided in the interests of health, safety, or welfare, in pursuance of any of the relevant statutory provisions.

This list of duties and responsibilities is not exhaustive, and the post holder may be required to undertake other appropriate duties as directed by the home manager.

This job description is subject to regular review and appropriate modification.

Pay: £24,038.00 per year
