Overview
As part of our recruitment process for this bailiff vacancy, we aim to support candidates by sharing interview questions in advance. If you are selected for interview, you will receive the questions relating to the assessed behaviours when we notify you that you are required to book your interview slot. This will help you prepare and reflect on relevant examples from your experience. During the interview, the panel will ask follow-up questions to explore your responses in more depth and gain further insight into your skills and experience. Role responsibilities
* Visit people in their homes and businesses as a Bailiff, explaining why you are visiting and what options are available to help resolve matters.
* Demonstrate empathy, remain non-judgmental, and act professionally to carry out your role while respecting customers.
* Plan days to manage workload, be adaptable, and lead in emotionally charged situations.
* Receive full bailiff training on Court Management systems and receive mentoring from an experienced colleague while in the field.
* Work within HMCTS and Civil Service policies; this role is not a private Bailiff position.
Requirements and work arrangements
* Full UK driving licence is essential; you may use your own car or, after probation, participate in the Department’s car leasing scheme. A UK licence held for over 12 months is required for lease vehicles; work mileage is reimbursed according to current allowances.
* Standard full-time hours are 37 hours per week; part-time, flexible and job-sharing arrangements are considered in line with policy. Minimum hours for part-time roles are 30 per week over 5 days.
* Hybrid working is available where business needs allow. You will be expected to spend at least 60% of working time in an office, subject to local capacity.
* You will receive PPE and safety training; you should be familiar with IT and court case management systems.
* The Bailiff role in HMCTS attracts a £2,000 per annum allowance; this is role-specific and non-pensionable and may be changed or removed at any time.
Qualifications and eligibility
* A driving licence and a road-worthy vehicle are essential for the role.
* Evidence of experience in decision-making, communication, and service quality is required; detailed guidance on statements of suitability is provided in the job material.

Immigration and right to work
Skilled Worker visa information: From 22 July 2025, the Government raised salary thresholds and skill levels. Additional information
Working arrangements & further information include hybrid working where possible, with some roles requiring office-based time. Nationally advertised roles will be appointed to the nearest viable office to the candidate’s home postcode. MoJ notes changes in Civil Service terms and conditions and may apply them to new staff as part of reform.
