Medical Secretary
We are looking for a highly motivated and well‑organised individual to join the Hepatology Team at York Hospital. This varied secretarial role will support Hepatology Consultants with communication, administrative and secretarial tasks and provide key support to our patients by assisting with queries, concerns and engaging with the wider clinical team and other stakeholders.
Closing date 27 April 2026. Interviews will be held in person only at York Hospital; remote interviews will not be available. Interested candidates are encouraged to make contact with the Recruiting Manager to have an informal discussion about the role.
Main duties of the job
Typing of clinic and general correspondence, complex diary management and provision of patient data. Dealing with correspondence from patients, GPs and other sources, including scheduling appointments, to ensure referral to treatment targets are met.
The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, relevant secretarial/admin experience, proficient typing skills (especially audiotyping) and experience with digital dictation. Knowledge of medical terminology would be advantageous.
To be successful you must be well‑organised, able to prioritise your own workload in a fast‑paced environment and work independently to meet strict deadlines. We require an efficient and resilient team player who upholds the Trust values and has a flexible approach to work, with a willingness to learn and meet the challenges of a fast‑paced service.
The post is advertised for 22.5 hours per week; alternative hours may be considered.

Qualifications
* GCSE English Language, Grade C or above (or equivalent)
* ECDL
Experience
* Minimum 2 years secretarial/administrative experience
* Experience of using a variety of IT applications, including Microsoft Office
* NHS Experience
Skills
* Ability to communicate with upset or angry people and deal with situations effectively
* Proficient audio typist with the ability to accurately transcribe complex digital dictation and type complex medical information whilst subject to frequent interruption
* Ability to explain complex information to staff, patients and others as required
* Ability to be flexible and adapt to new demands
Knowledge
* Thorough knowledge of medical terminology
