Overview

We are currently seeking an experienced Assistant Materials Engineer to join our team at Devonport, Plymouth. Our team delivers heavy civil engineering projects in and around the Royal Navy Dockyard. Because of the sensitive nature of work on this site, this role requires a Security Check (SC) or Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) conducted by the UK Government’s United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV) agency. This clearance must be completed prior to employment and involves a thorough residency and background review.


Job Details

BAM operates a flexible working policy. This position is offered by BAM and will engage with a joint venture partner’s environment and sustainability policies, processes and statutory requirements to ensure proper implementation on the project.


Key Responsibilities

* Review requirements from Works Information, SCEWs, and design materials specifications.
* Review Material Control Records (MCRs).
* Advise on required derogations and amendments to specifications.
* Coordinate materials specifications, Inspection Testing Procedures (ITP) requirements, and supply‑chain material management during mobilisation and works execution.
* Review and refine testing requirements and scope.
* Develop templates for testing and technical assurance (TA).
- Develop a database of testing and test record data.
* Maintain the requirements register and advise the TA team.
* Engage with supply chain/sub‑contractors and support engineering, procurement, and construction teams.
* Understand the client and joint venture partners’ environment and sustainability policies, processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company’s operations.


Qualifications & Experience

* Degree qualified in Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Earthworks (desirable).
* HND/HNC/NVQ in a relevant subject (beneficial).
* Previous materials experience.
* Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
* Reliable with excellent time‑keeping.
* Willingness to work overtime, including weekend and/or night shifts.
* Full driving licence (appreciated).
* Preferably industry‑accredited safety training (eg. CSCS).
* Ideally, prior experience in a similar role on another project.
