Job title: Mechanical Design Engineer\n \nSalary: Up to £47,000 per annum\n \n Location: West Northamptonshire\n \n Hours: Full-time, permanent role\n \n Position Summary\nOur client is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background or keen interest in mechanical systems for the entertainment industry. This role is ideal for an individual looking to advance their engineering career by contributing to the delivery of world-class entertainment productions, arena shows, immersive experiences, and touring events. The position offers the opportunity to develop within a dynamic, technically challenging, and creatively driven environment, with a clear path for professional progression.\n\n Key Responsibilities\n CAD Design & Technical Drawing\n\nProduces detailed fabrication, layout, and general arrangement drawings using AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.\nDesigns bespoke lifting and structural components such as lifting frames, truss adaptors, hoist brackets, automation hardware, and structural steel assemblies.\nPrepares clear and accurate fabrication drawings for use in metalwork production, machining, and on-site assembly.Collaboration with Production Teams\n\nInterprets creative and technical briefs from production managers, designers, and structural supervisors.\nContributes mechanical and structural insights during design meetings and technical reviews.\nTranslates artistic concepts into engineered solutions that are tourable, installable, and compliant with relevant safety standards and production schedules.Project & Site Coordination\n\nWorks closely with fabrication teams, supervisors, and on-site crews to ensure designs are practical and installable.\nConducts site surveys to evaluate structural limitations, capacities, and venue interfaces.\nSupports on-site implementation, integrating lifting systems into temporary and permanent structures.Engineering & Safety Assurance\n\nPerforms basic structural and load calculations, including assessments of point loads, shear, and tension.\nApplies knowledge of LOLER, PUWER, BS/EN standards, and internal procedures to maintain safety and compliance.\nKeeps accurate and up-to-date documentation, including bills of materials, drawing registers, and revision histories.Required Qualifications\n\nDegree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, or a related field.\nDemonstrated experience in a mechanical design role, preferably involving lifting systems, structural steelwork, or live event engineering.\nProficiency in AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor for 2D and 3D design.\nStrong understanding of metal fabrication, welding, machining, and modular assembly techniques.\nExcellent communication skills with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.\nProven ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.\nPossession of a full UK driving licence for site visits and installations.Preferred Skills & Experience\n\nPractical knowledge of steelwork, lifting systems, and stage machinery.\nFamiliarity with motors, hoists, counterweight systems, load distribution, and temporary steel structures.\nExperience working within or alongside fabrication shops or scenic engineering teams.\nUnderstanding of health & safety considerations in live performance settings, including dynamic load factors.\nHands-on experience with load-ins, installations, or touring productions.Benefits\n\nCompetitive salary and benefits package\nGenerous pension scheme\nCollaborative, hands-on work culture with opportunities for career advancement\nDirect involvement in internationally renowned projects and venues
