Job responsibilities
Clinical
1. To carry out, technically and clinically interpret and produce detailed reports to a high level of competence, on the following sleep investigations, within outpatient and inpatient settings: a) Overnight Oximetry b) Cardiorespiratory Sleep Studies c) Polysomnography d) MSLT/MWT e) Actigraphy f) Capillary Blood Gases g) Transcutaneous carbon dioxide (TcCO2) monitoring
2. To initiate patients on CPAP treatment within outpatient and inpatient settings, selecting the required equipment and settings.
3. To carry out non-medical outpatient clinic follow-up and assess the progress of patients on CPAP therapy, formulating and delivering treatment plans as necessary.
4. To deal with complex patients that may have special needs or require a higher level of care, providing tailored individual appointments, as and when necessary.
5. To support the provision of the drop-in clinic and telephone/email support line for the Home CPAP service, troubleshooting any issues arising, triaging urgency of calls and action requests, following agreed protocols.
6. To communicate with General Practitioners and medical and non-medical staff as appropriate, on treatment plans and progress of patients on CPAP therapy. This may include complex and sensitive information.
7. To use expert knowledge to identify issues with data quality and accuracy and, where possible, rectify equipment malfunction or failure to ensure data captured is of the highest quality.
8. To support multidisciplinary staff on the use of CPAP equipment and evaluation of therapy, both within and outside the Trust, as appropriate. This may include training for carers providing support to patients on CPAP therapy.
9. To participate in clinical trials, research projects and audits as agreed with the Lead Sleep Physiologist.
10. Responsible for the safe use of specialised medical equipment.
11. To maintain and develop own skills to deliver the service required to meet patient needs. This includes the provision and clinical interpretation of the aforementioned diagnostic and therapeutic services, and related skills.
12. The post holder is responsible for continually maintaining their working knowledge of local departmental practices, policies and procedures.
13. To work independently and autonomously, effectively managing own workload and meet deadlines.
14. To deputise for the Lead Sleep Physiologist and assist with the line management of the sleep physiology team, as and when required.
15. To provide expert knowledge and senior support to junior staff members.
16. Willing to undergo further training in line with professional development and service needs, as agreed with the Lead Sleep Physiologist.
17. To assist on data archiving, as well as safe and adequate storage of all clinical data, within the Information Governance Framework.
18. To participate in the development, reviewing and updating of standard operating procedures, protocols and patient leaflets within the adult sleep service as required.
19. Provide expert knowledge and support for procurement of new or replacement medical and IT equipment.
20. To actively participate in the training and mentoring of junior staff, in order to develop the expertise within the team in line with departmental objectives.
21. To attend and participate in the sleep physiology training sessions, leading sessions as requested by the Lead Sleep Physiologist.
22. To deliver individual and/or group training to medical and non-medical healthcare professionals and trainees, as and when required. This may include students through national training schemes (e.g. STP, PTP and Medical Students...).
23. To participate in the efficient and effective management of resources and consumable supplies, ensuring these are used efficiently and timely managed.
24. To participate in the Trusts annual appraisal system to identify objectives and be willing to undergo further training/study as and when required.
25. To work with the sleep physiology team in ensuring that the national waiting time targets are met through effective scheduling of workload and responding to patient demand.
26. To work cooperatively with the adult sleep physiology team in the expansion and promotion of the sleep service. This includes ways of improving efficiency, cost savings and service enhancement, leading projects as directed.
27. To be compliant with Trusts statutory and mandatory training, policies and procedures.
28. To assist in the provision and maintenance of statistical information as required for statistical and other management purposes.
29. To participate in the Trust/Region wide projects, as agreed with the Lead Sleep Physiologist.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* BSc in clinical physiology or equivalent with relevant experience within sleep physiology sciences
* Eligible for or already registered with RCCP or equivalent
* Evidence of CPD
* Accredited Sleep Physiologist (ESRS or RPSGT) or currently working towards it
* Training and Teaching Course
Experience
* Experience working in sleep physiology services.
* Extensive experience in establishing and supporting patients on CPAP and knowledge of treatment-related equipment.
* Extensive experience in performing and interpreting complex and previous experience of delivering front-line patient care within NHS or other healthcare provider.
* Experience in providing formal and informal training.
* Experience in participating or undertaking research, audits, and writing clinical research papers/abstracts.
* Experience in overseeing staff.
