Summary of the Role
We’re seeking an experienced and technically accomplished Lead Engineer to join our Protection team. You’ll be responsible for leading the design and implementation of Protection Systems for major clients across the UK’s Transmission and Distribution sector. These projects span greenfield installations, system upgrades, and integration with existing infrastructure.
This is a senior role that blends technical leadership, stakeholder engagement, and strategic delivery. You’ll guide multidisciplinary teams, mentor engineers, and ensure that solutions meet both client expectations and regulatory standards.
* Lead and drive project teams delivering protection system solutions
* Mentor and coach engineers within the protection discipline
* Support project managers with programme planning, change identification, and cost control
* Identify and manage technical risks to ensure smooth project execution
* Chair design reviews and ensure compliance with client and regulatory standards
* Develop SLDs, KLDs, and concept-level designs aligned with project requirements
* Conduct site visits and non-intrusive surveys to support design validation and implementation
* Produce and review technical documentation, schematics, and protection settings
* Lead configuration and type registration of protection solutions
* Provide technical input for sales and tendering activities
* Ensure delivery of assigned tasks and project milestones on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards
We’re looking for someone who brings deep technical expertise and strong leadership qualities:
* Proven experience in UK Transmission & Distribution systems
* Hands-on knowledge of protection relay technologies from GE, Siemens, SEL, ABB
* Working knowledge of IEC 61850 and its practical implementation
* Strong understanding of protection design principles and system resilience
* Excellent communication skills with internal teams and external stakeholders
* Structured and analytical approach to problem-solving
* Ability to lead, collaborate, and motivate multidisciplinary teams
* Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or equivalent)
* Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel
* Familiarity with National Grid standards and policies (desirable but not essential)
