Community Global News Assistant (Fixed-term contract)

The Community team is looking for a comment moderator to work on a temporary basis to supplement our existing team. This position is full-time fixed-term contact, and is expected to last up to six months with the possibility of extension.
Your role will involve the review, approval and curation of reader comments in a fast-paced work environment. You might also work with reporters and editors on replies to reader comments and assist the Community editors with other tasks.
The New York Times is known within the industry as having one of the most thoughtful, robust and helpful comments sections. Readers come to us looking to participate in an informed and thoughtful debate on the most important news facing the world today.
This is an in-office position, based in London and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. This role reports to the Senior Editor, Community Operations.
Responsibilities:
* Moderate comments according to NYT guidelines, maintaining a high-quality user experience.
* Coordinate work with other moderators on duty.
* Nominate comments for highlighting as NYT Picks.
* Assist reporters and editors with replies to reader comments, including by flagging opportunities for our journalists to respond to reader questions.
* Share insights about trends in comments with the Community team, Audience team and specific desks in the newsroom and Opinion section.
* Flag errors identified by readers to Community editors and relevant desk editors as needed.
* Track your work through team tools such as Slack, Google Sheets and Google Docs.
* You will report to the Senior Editor, Community Operations.
Basic Qualifications:
* A demonstrated interest in community building
* Demonstrated news judgment
* Strong attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience with online discussion groups as a moderator, manager or contributor
* A willingness to help shape The Times's roadmap for building communities within our comments.
