Trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner
An exciting opportunity has arisen to train as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner within Croydon Talking Therapies. Training to become a PWP is a great opportunity for people looking to pursue a career in Psychology.
As a Trainee PWP you will have a mix of service and university days. You will be employed through South London & Maudsley NHS Trust and will be enrolled with our partner University College London (UCL) where you will undertake a Post Graduate Certificate in Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Interventions.
We are looking to train up to nine Trainee PWP’s in our Croydon service, with the posts starting at the beginning of October 2026. Training is full‑time: trainees attend university one day a week and work in service the remaining four days a week.
Training course fees on this programme are fully funded by the NHS. In addition, trainees will receive a salary from the London IAPT service for their placement over the year of the programme.
International Students are not eligible and the course is not suitable for those requiring sponsorship.

Job Responsibilities
* Provide psychological wellbeing interventions to adult clients via telephone, digital platforms and face‑to‑face sessions.
* Attend supervision and academic sessions as required.
* Complete written reports and administrative tasks, including detailed documentation and data synthesis.
* Work within the IAPT stepped‑care framework and meet agreed clinical outcome targets.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Bachelor’s Degree with honours in Psychology or a related field.
* Training relevant to mental health.
Experience
* Work experience with a diverse mental health population, either paid or voluntary.
* Experience in a fast‑paced role requiring organisational and communication skills.
* Experience de‑escalating anxiety and frustration over phone or email.
* Ability to develop therapeutic relationships and apply therapeutic skills.
* Post‑graduate clinical experience.
* Paid work in a psychological therapies service and/or primary care services.
* Experience working in a service with agreed targets demonstrating clinical outcomes.
* Experience completing advanced administrative tasks such as written reports or data synthesis.
Knowledge
* Understanding of anxiety and depression, how they might present in primary care, and assessment and treatment methods.
* Awareness of diversity issues gained through relevant training.
* Understanding of IAPT stepped‑care services.
* Theoretical knowledge of more complex mental health problems.
* Understanding of the impact of work on mental health.
* Knowledge of evidence‑based therapies and their relevance to this post.
Skills
* Manage emotionally stressful situations and verbal aggression or hostility.
* Complete academic components of the role.
* Integrate information, make evaluations, formulations and decisions.
* Fluency in languages other than English.

Salary
£33,262 to £36,027 a year inclusive of inner or outer HCAs, dependent on location.
