Job Title:

Geography Teacher (Secondary)

Location:

Dunblane, Scotland

Role: 3 days per week

This could be a full-time role combined with the teaching of Modern Studies.

Job Purpose

To deliver high-quality Geography education within a full-boarding, nurturing school environment, supporting young people to achieve their academic potential while contributing to their wider personal development. The role requires a commitment to Curriculum for Excellence (CfE), strong pastoral care, and active involvement in the broader life of the school community.

Key ResponsibilitiesLearning and Teaching

* Plan and deliver engaging Geography lessons across Broad General Education (BGE) and Senior Phase, including SQA qualifications (National 4/5, Higher, Advanced Higher).
* Adapt teaching approaches to support a diverse boarding pupil cohort, recognising varied backgrounds and experiences.
* Promote independent learning, resilience, and critical thinking.
* Use formative and summative assessment strategies to monitor progress and raise attainment.
* Incorporate fieldwork and outdoor learning where appropriate, enhancing real-world understanding.
* Integrate digital learning tools to support teaching and learning.

Curriculum Development

* Contribute to the ongoing development of a dynamic and relevant Geography curriculum aligned with the Curriculum for Excellence.
* Support interdisciplinary learning and cross-curricular initiatives.
* Participate in departmental moderation and quality assurance processes.

Pastoral Care and Boarding Contribution

* Play an active role in pastoral care, supporting pupils’ wellbeing in a full-boarding setting.
* Build strong, supportive relationships with pupils, acting as a positive role model.
* Contribute, where required, to residential life or duty rotas, supporting the ethos of a 24/7 learning environment.
* Promote wellbeing in line with GIRFEC principles.

Wider School and Co-Curricular Contribution

* Participate fully in the co-curricular programme, including outdoor education, activities, and clubs (e.g., Duke of Edinburgh Award, sustainability initiatives, or similar programmes).
* Support and lead educational trips, field visits, and residential experiences.
* Contribute to whole-school events and community life.

Assessment and Reporting

* Prepare pupils for SQA assessments, coursework, and examinations.
* Monitor and track pupil progress effectively.
* Produce reports and engage with parents/carers and relevant stakeholders.

Professional Responsibilities

* Maintain registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).
* Engage actively in continuous professional development (CPD).
* Uphold school policies, including safeguarding and child protection.
* Work collaboratively with colleagues across academic and pastoral teams.

Person SpecificationEssential Qualifications

* Degree in Geography (or closely related subject)
* PGDE Secondary (or equivalent teaching qualification)
* GTCS registration

Essential Skills and Experience

* Strong understanding of CfE and SQA frameworks
* Ability to inspire and motivate young people in both academic and residential environments
* Excellent classroom management and organisational skills
* Strong interpersonal skills, with a commitment to pupil wellbeing
* Flexibility and willingness to contribute to boarding school life

Desirable

* Experience teaching National Qualifications up to Higher/Advanced Higher
* Experience in boarding or residential education settings
* Experience leading fieldwork and outdoor learning
* Involvement in extracurricular programmes (e.g., outdoor education, leadership awards, service-based activities)

Working Conditions

* Teaching responsibilities aligned with SNCT agreements
* Additional expectation of involvement in boarding life and co-curricular activities
* Term-time role with structured residential or extracurricular commitments
