Reporting to the Deputy Head of Finance, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high‑quality business and financial support across both the Care Group and Corporate Group. The role involves close collaboration with the Associate Head of Financial Management and colleagues across the wider finance function to ensure strong, cohesive financial stewardship. Ideal candidates will be a fully qualified finance professional or an aspiring trainee working toward full qualification.
Responsibilities
* Actively support the Deputy Head of Finance in leading on the financial aspects of service delivery within the Care Group or Corporate Group, including CIP delivery.
* Adopt a proactive and assertive approach when working with other customers and finance colleagues.
* Consolidate the Directorate financial position and develop plans to mitigate adverse performance and capitalise on opportunities.
* Interact positively and supportively with Directorate Leadership Teams, Speciality Leadership Teams, budget managers, customers and colleagues.
* Ensure corporate awareness, confidentiality and discretion.
* Support the Deputy Head of Finance and Leadership Team in delivering key business objectives, including financial recovery and quality service improvement recovery plans.
* Contribute to idea generation, development, costing and monitoring of CIP plans at directorate and speciality level.
* Provide business support and advice to leadership teams and budget managers, including expert knowledge of NHS legislation and policy.
* Act as finance lead on specific work stream projects as agreed with the Deputy Head of Finance and Associate Head of Financial Management.
* Ensure regular meetings with leadership teams are undertaken and finance training provided as required.
* Develop and monitor directorate and speciality reporting, providing financial advice operationally and strategically to senior managers and budget managers.
* Support the Deputy Head of Finance in developing business proposals within the corporate framework for inclusion in service level agreement proposals for commissioners.
* Provide costing and financial input to business cases, ensuring understanding of the impact on the directorate position prior to Head of Finance sign‑off.
* Aid negotiations with ICB, DHSC, local authorities, universities and commercial organisations on financial aspects of service delivery and development.
* Coordinate financial management duties to agreed corporate standards and timetables, including production of monthly performance reports, year‑end forecasts and budget information.
* Maintain the integrity of the general ledger, including budget maintenance.
* Cost service change/development projects and identify financial and service risks through modelling.
* Provide input to the national cost collection exercise in line with latest guidance.
* Deliver finance training to staff across the Trust aligned to departmental objectives.
* Report and monitor capital schemes for the Care Group or Corporate Group.
* Ensure consistent application of good business and accounting practice, ensuring compliance with the NHS Manual of Accounts, SFIs, Scheme of Delegation, Scheme of Budgetary Control and relevant accounting standards including accruals and commitment‑based principles.
* Manage a team of finance staff, including allocation of work, recruitment, training, development, appraisal, sickness monitoring and leave authorisation.
* Undertake project work supporting process change and develop benchmarking techniques to improve economy, efficiency and effectiveness.
* Deputise for the Deputy Head of Finance on specific projects and adhoc occasions.
* Review own work processes, recommend improvements and implement best practices.
* Ensure strong financial control and robust governance arrangements throughout the Care Group or Corporate Group.
Corporate Role
* Support the Associate Head of Financial Management and Head of Finance in preparing accurate and timely monthly and annual financial accounts.
* Support the Assistant Director of Finance and Heads of Finance in developing a professional training programme for all finance staff.
Senior Finance Staff Responsibilities
* Attend regular senior finance management meetings and contribute to the discussion.
* Continuously improve the quality of financial reporting and the awareness of financial issues across the Trust.
* Maintain and develop working relationships within and outside the Trust.
* Ensure compliance with HR policies and practices.
* Pursue post‑qualification and personal development.
* Maintain focus on tasks despite frequent interruptions.
* Undertake other duties as appropriate to the post as specified by the Head of Finance Management.
Qualifications & Skills
* Fully qualified finance professional (e.g., ACCA, CIMA, CIFA) or trainee working toward full qualification.
* Strong understanding of NHS financial rules, budgeting, forecasting and reporting.
* Experience in financial analysis, governance, and stakeholder engagement.
* Excellent communication, organisational and leadership skills.
