Band 8a Specialist Surgical Pharmacist

Main area Pharmacy Grade NHS AfC: Band 8a. Contract: Permanent. Hours: Part time - 15 hours per week (will include late duties and weekends). Job ref 391-RFL-7356081.

Employer: Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Site: Royal Free, London. Salary: £64,156 - £71,148 per annum inclusive of UCAS (pro rata). Salary period: Yearly. Closing: 18/09/2025 23:59.

Role purpose and scope

An exciting opportunity has been developed within our surgical pharmacy team to lead the provision of a clinical pharmacy service to surgical pre-assessment, Day Surgery Unit and in-patient surgical wards. The post holder will:

* Provide advice on the use of medicines in the perioperative period.
* Assist with medicines reconciliation within the surgical pre-assessment clinic.
* Be an integral member of the surgical pharmacy team, providing a clinical pharmacy service to a surgical ward, contributing to treatment protocols and guidelines, and training and education of staff.

Candidates will have a background in clinical pharmacy with some experience in surgery. They will ideally have an independent prescribing qualification (or be working towards it) and have experience of working in clinics and/or managing their own caseload. They should be confident working with a multidisciplinary team and capable of building rapport with patients attending the surgical pre-assessment clinic. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deliver against key targets and objectives are essential.


Main duties of the job

* Act as a deputy for Principal Pharmacist when necessary.
* Participate in speciality ward rounds to support safe and effective use of medicines.
* Participate in pre-operative assessment clinics, taking accurate medication histories and advising on perioperative medicines.
* Contribute to evidence-based prescribing guidelines and education/training of healthcare professionals within the specialist area.
* Manage drug expenditure and high-cost drug processes; develop and implement clinical guidelines; participate in audits and practice research.
* Support training and supervision of junior pharmacy staff and act as a clinical role model.
* Work with the clinical risk team to minimise medicines-related risk.

Values

Education and Professional Qualifications

* MPharm or equivalent.
* Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
* Postgraduate diploma in pharmacy practice or equivalent.
* Advanced qualification in specialist area.
* Registered supplementary or independent prescriber.
* RPS faculty member.'


Experience

* Considerable hospital pharmacy experience including specialist clinical pharmacist work and experience with surgical patients.
* Experience of managing change, service development, and drug expenditure analysis.
* Experience in writing/implementing clinical guidelines and government directives; multidisciplinary collaboration.
* Evidence of clinical audit, drug evaluation or practice research; training/education delivery.
* Experience in staff appraisal and feedback.


Skills and attributes

* Good written and verbal communication; strong interpersonal and teaching skills.
* Ability to manage day-to-day responsibilities and handle unpredictable/acute demands.
* Ability to justify advice and communicate with patients, carers and staff at all levels.
* Time, people and resource management to deliver timely outcomes; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* High accuracy under pressure and ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment; initiative and problem solving; risk awareness.
* Commitment to best practice and continuous professional development.
* Computer literacy (word processing, email, internet); spreadsheet/database skills preferred.
