We are recruiting a Pharmacy Technician to support the delivery of a medicines automation programme at Aintree University Hospital, focused on the rollout of automated medicines storage systems across inpatient wards and theatres.
This post sits within the Digital Medicines / Pharmacy team and will play a key role in ensuring medicines automation systems are safely implemented, embedded into clinical practice, and delivering improvements in patient safety, efficiency and staff experience.
You will work closely with pharmacists, technicians, nurses and operational teams to support system configuration, ward readiness, training and go‑live activity as the rollout progresses across multiple clinical areas at Aintree.
Implementation and Digital Systems
* Support the implementation and rollout of medicines automation systems across Aintree wards and clinical areas
* Assist with system configuration, testing and optimisation of medicines automation software in collaboration with pharmacy and programme teams
* Support ward engagement, training and go‑live activity, working with nursing and pharmacy colleagues to embed safe new ways of working
* Provide technical and operational support to ensure automated cabinets are used safely and effectively
* Contribute to medicines storage compliance, stock control and governance processes, supporting regulatory standards and local policies
* Maintain accurate records and support audit, monitoring and service improvement activity linked to medicines automation
* Undertake dispensary and ward‑based pharmacy technician duties as required, aligned to service needs and the fixed‑term focus of the role
* Work as part of the wider Pharmacy and Digital Medicines team, contributing to continuous improvement and service development
Dispensing and Technical Pharmacy Duties
* Dispense inpatient, outpatient and discharge prescriptions in line with safe systems of work
* Dispense controlled drugs, unlicensed medicines and clinical trial medicines where trained and authorised
* Check prescriptions and medicines where deemed competent
* Undertake ward‑based and dispensary‑based technical duties as required
* Rotate within pharmacy services where necessary, aligned to service needs
Medicines Storage, Stock Control and Governance
* Support medicines storage compliance in pharmacy and clinical areas
* Participate in stock control processes, including stock checks, ordering and discrepancy management
* Maintain accurate records for medicines, including controlled drugs
* Participate in audits of medicines storage, stock and systems
* Support regulatory and governance requirements relating to medicines management
Ward and Clinical Area Support
* Provide technical support to wards and departments using automated or manual medicines systems
* Liaise with ward staff to resolve medicines supply or system‑related issues
* Support ward‑based medicines processes, including top‑up services where required
* Answer routine technical queries and escalate appropriately
Training, Support and Communication
* Support training and induction of pharmacy staff and ward users on medicines systems
* Act as a role model for safe practice and professional behaviour
* Communicate clearly with pharmacy, nursing and multidisciplinary teams
* Contribute to written guidance, standard operating procedures and user support materials
Quality, Safety and Clinical Governance
* Contribute to clinical governance activity, including audits and service improvement
* Support incident reporting, learning and risk management processes
* Maintain high standards of accuracy, safety and professionalism
* Comply with medicines legislation, Trust policies and professional standards
Professional Practice and Development
* Maintain registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
* Undertake Continuing Professional Development to keep knowledge and skills up to date
* Participate in training and development opportunities
* Work flexibly and adapt to service change and new ways of working
