Modelling & Simulation Architect
Location: Belfast or Templecombe, full-time hybrid working with 3 days in the office plus travel

* Apply your modelling and simulation skills to solving critical defence problems, supporting the evolution of existing systems and testing new concepts for future products

Our Opportunity
We are looking for a talented and experienced Modelling & Simulation Architect to join our innovative team. In this pivotal role, you will lead the design, development, and implementation of cutting-edge modelling and simulation systems. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in simulation methodologies, software development, system architecture, and relevant domain knowledge, driving impactful solutions that shape the future of our technology. While this role has no direct reports, aspiring people managers are encouraged to apply.
Based in Belfast, you’ll travel quarterly to Templecombe. If located in Templecombe, there will be monthly visits tailored to the needs of the business. Thales Land & Air Systems (LAS) supplies systems, equipment, sensors and services for civil and military air traffic control, air defence and land combat. Integrated Airspace Protection Systems (IAS) activities are at the heart of the forces’ operational priorities, and a major growth opportunity for Thales. Our activities ensure that nations maintain sovereignty over their airspace and assist the Armed Forces in safeguarding populations and infrastructure from all forms of aerial threats.

Key Responsibilities And Tasks
* Create and bring to life high-fidelity simulation models and architectures that drive impactful applications
* Partner closely with cross-functional teams to grasp their needs and transform them into powerful, effective simulation solutions
* Develop and rigorously validate simulation algorithms and models to deliver unmatched accuracy and reliability
* Perform in-depth system analysis and fine-tune performance to maximize simulation effectiveness
* Seamlessly integrate simulation models with other systems and tools, ensuring smooth workflows
* Lead with technical expertise and empower junior team members through mentoring and guidance
* Keep abreast of the forefront of innovation by exploring latest advancements in modelling and simulation technologies
* Meticulously document all facets of the simulation system architecture and development processes
About You
Essential:
* Master’s and/or bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a closely related discipline
* Demonstrated expertise in modelling and simulation, ideally within complex system environments
* In-depth knowledge of leading simulation tools and frameworks such as Simulink, Modelica, and others
* Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving capabilities
* Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams
* Mentor and leader capable of guiding and inspiring team members
Nice-to-have:
* Expertise in Python, C++, or MATLAB
* Hands-on experience with real-time systems and distributed simulation architectures
* Knowledge of industry standards and best practices in modelling and simulation
* Foundational knowledge in systems engineering and systems thinking
* Domain knowledge in aerospace, defence, or robotics
* Proficiency with DIS and HLA simulation frameworks
Security Clearance Statement
This role will require SC Clearance. It would be advantageous if currently held; otherwise the successful applicant will undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance. See UKSV for guidance. Eligibility typically requires residence in the UK for the last 5 years.
