We are looking for a dynamic, motivated and highly specialised Occupational Therapist to work in paediatric orthopaedics as part of our wider musculoskeletal team. We require recent, relevant clinical experience, knowledge and skills to predominantly lead on our out-patient service with a small in-patient caseload. We work alongside a team of four orthopaedic and three spinal surgeons. You will see patients referred from our fracture and orthopaedic clinics for urgent management of traumas such as upper and lower limb fractures and soft tissue injuries. You will also see patients for management and rehabilitation of more chronic and congenital conditions. The clinical caseload also covers in-patient management of highly complex trauma and management of patients following corrective surgery for neuromuscular scoliosis. Part of the role will be to also support any neurological splinting requirements or complex trauma patients alongside the Neuro Therapy team The post is permanent, 22.5 hours a week: with a working pattern of Wednesdays and Fridays, and the third day will be discussed at interview. You will ensure a high clinical standard of Occupational Therapy care to patients and provide supervision and teaching to members of our team and the wider Children’s Hospital Team. Main duties of the job You will be an expert clinical advisor and leader within the Paediatric OT MSK team at NUH, as well as providing some splinting expertise to our neurological therapy team You will have excellent communication and team working skills, as well as a flexible approach and the ability to manage your own time and workload in what is a fast paced working environment. The post has a requirement that you manage and support staff and Students, allowing you to develop your leadership, managerial and teaching skills. You will have operational duties where you will help lead the wider Childrens Occupational Therapy Team You will be required to work on the weekend paediatric rota and must have the relevant skills and competencies to do so. We provide In-patient and out-patient care for children up to the age of 19 years old. With 97 beds, we care for around 40,000 children each year from Nottinghamshire and beyond, treating a full range of conditions, including planned and emergency treatment and surgery, Burns and Plastics, Neurological conditions, Oncology, Paediatric critical care, Renal conditions and transplantation, and Spinal and Orthopaedic care. Person specification Qualifications • BSc Hons (or equivalent) Occupational Therapy • Full Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) registration • Recognised post -graduate training relevant to specialty preferably including MSc or completed modules Experience • Wide ranging and extensive experience of working within specialist area • Knowledge of current best practice within a clinical specialty • Able to evaluate current research and make recommendations for change in practice and implement these changes Communication and relationship • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Able to discuss treatment options and recommend best course of intervention to patients and carers using negotiating, persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills • Communicate complex patient related information effectively to ensure collaborative working with MDT colleagues across health & social care sectors Analytical and Judgement • Able to reflect and critically appraise own performance and the performance of other staff • Risk assessment skills for the safe management and discharge of very complex patients • Analyse information from clinical assessments and make judgements about appropriate interventions for highly complex patients Planning & Organisation • Able to plan the delivery of a service for a specialist area where there is variable capacity and fluctuating demand • Able to lead in the development, review and implementation of relevant polices and service development, recognising and responding to wider strategic concerns Physical skills • Able to handle and move complex patients safely and in a way which promotes rehabilitation if applicable. • Able to use and/or manoeuvre a range of medical devices including, for example, handling/assistive and anthropometric equipment if applicable.
