Digital Pathology / Automation OPs Manager Cellular Pathology
Job Summary
To be an efficient, flexible member of the laboratory and wider Pathology service providing a consistently high quality and professional service. The Operational Manager for Cellular Pathology will coordinate local delivery of Digital Pathology and automation projects within the Cellular Pathology Department, working alongside laboratory, procurement, IT and business management to advance the next generation of automation within Cellular Pathology.
Main Duties
* Embed Digital, AI and Automation into day‑to‑day laboratory operations through in‑depth scientific and technical expertise.
* Monitor and report progress against project plans, managing risk, benefits and budget to keep projects on track.
* Lead and manage the digitisation of workflows and automation pathways, implementing AI systems to assist reporting.
* Produce strategic documents for the Trust, analysing complex facts and proposing evidence‑based solutions.
* Co‑ordinate and manage interfaces between projects, adhering to governance structures.
* Provide strategic leadership, communication and quality‑control oversight across the Cellular Pathology team.

Job Responsibilities
* Provide a timely, accurate, high‑quality Cellular Pathology service as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Work with consultant pathologists and service management to introduce new tests or processes.
* Apply specialised judgement, scientific knowledge and practical skills to complex problem‑solving and quality control.
* Supervise, organise, and plan operational activities within the section, reporting non‑compliance to the line manager.
* Maintain a robust audit system and advise service users on protocols.
* Ensure consumable stocks, reagents and quality‑control materials are available and manage waste.
* Report faults, non‑compliance and undertake corrective action.
* Manage and maintain complex laboratory equipment, ensuring compliance with audit and accreditation requirements.
* Promote change, develop professional practice and enhance patient care.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
* HCPC registration and MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent laboratory experience.
* Substantial supervisory experience in Cellular Pathology.
* Evidence of setting up a service, re‑patriation of tests or reconfiguration of services.
* Knowledge of Digital Pathology, AI or Automation in Cellular Pathology.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
* Recognised Management Qualification.
* Up‑to‑date knowledge in AI within Cellular Pathology.
Knowledge and Skills
* Advanced technical and scientific knowledge of diagnostic histopathology.
* Specialist knowledge of change management or organisational development.
* Evidence of service improvement initiatives.
* Experience of project work, including statistical analysis of data.
