Head of Legal Services

We are seeking a Head of Legal Services to lead and manage the Council’s Legal Services function. This senior leadership role is pivotal in ensuring that the Council, its partners, and stakeholders receive high-quality, timely, and legally sound advice. The successful candidate will deputise for the Council Solicitor and Monitoring Officer and play a crucial role in the heart of the Council’s decision-making and governance arrangements.
Day-to-day of the role
* Deputise for the Council Solicitor and Monitoring Officer as required.
* Lead, develop, and manage the Legal Services team, ensuring delivery of high-quality legal advice, assistance, representation, and advocacy.
* Engage in governance and monitoring officer duties, including attending key council meetings and handling complaints against Elected Members.
* Provide expert legal advice and personally undertake advocacy when required, managing complex litigation processes.
* Ensure the Legal Services operates as a high-performing in-house legal practice, compliant with various legal standards and council policies.
* Manage the Legal Services budget, including monitoring staff costs and legal expenditures.
* Lead strategic projects and contribute to the development of council strategies, policies, and procedures.
Required Skills & Qualifications
* Qualified Barrister or Solicitor with significant post-qualification experience.
* Substantial public sector experience, particularly within local government, is essential.
* Extensive experience advising Elected Members and senior officers.
* Strong leadership and people management skills, with proven financial and budget management experience.
* Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, with experience in delivering advocacy and presentations.
* Demonstrated committed to professional development and continuous learning.
