Rutherford Cross is proud to be sourcing a brilliant Employment Tax Manager role for an award-winning independent practice that specialises in private, corporate, and specialist tax. The business has offices across Scotland and the Northeast, and is flexible on location. A hybrid schedule is available. This is a key role offering the opportunity to advise high-profile clients, drive strategic initiatives, and support complex project work, while managing compliance and leading junior team members.
You will be providing expert guidance on employment tax matters, including benefits-in-kind, IR35 compliance, termination payments, salary sacrifice schemes, the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS), and National Minimum Wage (NMW) considerations. You will help clients navigate the employee journey, understanding and addressing relevant tax issues and implications.
You will work in a close-knit team of 6 tax professionals and have opportunities for personal development and career growth within the business. This role is ideal for someone with a background in employment tax seeking to join a reputable and respected practice. The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator, personable, and values-driven.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Advisory & Strategic Support: Deliver high-quality advice on employment tax issues including benefits-in-kind, IR35, termination payments, salary sacrifice, CIS, and NMW; guide clients on reward strategies and support cost-effective compensation planning.
2. Compliance & Reporting: Ensure accurate and timely submission of employment tax filings such as PAYE, NIC, P11Ds, PSA, and CIS; manage HMRC communications and enquiries; stay updated on legislative changes for ongoing compliance.
3. Process & Team Management: Oversee day-to-day activities of junior team members; support their development; identify opportunities for process improvements.
4. Project Involvement: Contribute to employment tax aspects of major projects including corporate transactions, PAYE health checks, and due diligence; advise on implementing new employee benefits or payroll systems from a tax perspective.
5. Training & Knowledge Sharing: Lead training sessions and provide updates on employment tax developments and best practices.
Candidate Profile:
* CTA, ACA, ICAS, or equivalent professional qualification in tax or accounting
* Significant experience in employment tax, preferably within a leading accountancy firm or consultancy
* Confidence in managing HMRC audits and enquiries
* Strong technical knowledge of UK employment tax legislation
* Excellent communication skills and a client-focused approach
* Proactive with strong attention to detail and a commitment to technical excellence
* Team-oriented with leadership qualities and a desire to foster growth in others
