The client is a well-established University in South West London.
Job Description
Main duties and responsibilities:
1. Year End Accounts: Lead on planning and delivering annual financial statements for the University and its subsidiaries, ensuring approval by senior management. Satisfy audit requirements and submit returns to external bodies (OfS, Charity Commission, Companies House, etc.). Ensure compliance with statutory requirements and develop relationships with external auditors. Provide technical accounting advice throughout the year.
2. External Returns: Prepare relevant external reports, including OfS returns such as TRAC, HE-BCI, and AFR.
3. Quarterly Responsibilities: Review and prepare balance sheets and cash flow forecasts for various cycles. Manage covenants to ensure lender compliance. Develop technical accounting papers to support year-end financial statements.
4. Monthly Responsibilities: Review and approve month-end journals (accruals, depreciation, research, donations, etc.). Prepare or review monthly balance sheet and cash flow forecasts. Manage balance sheet reconciliations and produce reports for senior management. Develop management information on the University's financial position and liaise with banks and investment managers. Prepare performance reports on investments and advise on improvements.
5. Daily/Weekly Responsibilities: Review debtors' aging weekly to assess bad debt provisions. Monitor treasury operations to ensure liquidity and investment of excess funds. Manage weekly Bacs payments and electronic transactions.
6. General and Ad-hoc: Promote adherence to policies and procedures to ensure robust controls. Ensure financial data accuracy in systems. Deputise for the Head of Financial Accounting and other team members. Approve payments from Accounts Payable and Payroll teams.
The Successful Applicant
Recognised accountancy qualification (ACA, ACCA, ACMA, CIPFA). Good knowledge of UK Financial Reporting Standard 102. Excellent analytical, technical accounting, and communication skills. Familiarity with large-scale finance systems, especially Unit 4 Agresso. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word. Management experience is essential.
