Offer description

Welcome to the future of nuclear energy, where Westinghouse Electric Company is leading the field with expertise and innovation to shape the power of tomorrow.

At Westinghouse, innovation is in our DNA. We are creative. We think differently. We reimagine the possible across the nuclear industry every day.

As a Health Physics Monitor Apprenticeship you will receive excellent training, hands-on experience from day one, and a clear route into a long-term career in the nuclear industry.

You'll join a supportive, professional team on a live nuclear site, combining on-the-job learning with structured training and mentoring to help you succeed.

Development Journey

This is a two-year Level 2 Nuclear Health Physics Monitor Apprenticeship, where you'll earn while you learn in a highly regulated, safety-critical environment.

From the outset, you'll be site-based Westinghouse – Springfields, Preston, supported by experienced mentors and an external training provider. You'll work towards nationally recognised qualifications while building a detailed portfolio of evidence that demonstrates your competence as a Health Physics Monitor.

On successful completion of the programme, you'll have the opportunity to apply for available roles within Springfields / Westinghouse, subject to business requirements.

Pathway

As a Health Physics Monitor apprentice, you'll provide radiological monitoring services at the workface to protect people, plant, and the environment from the adverse effects of ionising radiation and contamination.

Your role will include:

1. Using specialist equipment to measure radiation dose rates and contamination levels
2. Monitoring personnel, areas, and activities across the site
3. Interpreting monitoring results and providing protection advice to facility operators
4. Completing calculations and recording monitoring data
5. Support safe operations and regulatory compliance within nuclear facilities

Your Training

Your training programme combines knowledge-based learning with practical, hands-on experience. You will complete external training supported by an on-site trainer, progressively moving into operational site-based work. We will assess your progress against government apprenticeship standards, culminating in our conduct of an End Point Assessment during the final six months.

Working environments & hours

This is a varied, hands-on role. You should be comfortable working outdoors, at heights, in confined spaces, and within nuclear facilities. We will require PPE, including respiratory protective equipment.

For safety reasons, some respiratory protective equipment requires a suitable face seal. This means that, when required to wear certain types of RPE, you will need to be clean shaven. We will provide further guidance and support as part of your training.

Typical working hours are 07:00–15:00. As you progress and gain competence, your employer may require you to work alternative shift patterns including 12-hour day/night shifts and weekend work following completion of the apprenticeship.
