Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Weston Dialysis Unit for a Registered Nurse, to join on a full-time basis.

* You will care for a group of patients each shift and participate in all aspects of haemodialysis patient care; you will oversee a named group of patients, including their blood results and overall care.
* A strong sense of teamwork and excellent communication skills are essential. Support will be provided to achieve haemodialysis competencies and develop skills in all aspects of haemodialysis care.

The unit has 15 haemodialysis stations and operates 6 days a week, Monday – Saturday, 06:30–19:00.

Main duties of the job

Working Within Our Department, Your Main Duties Will Include

* Organising and participating in the delivery of high standards of evidence-based nursing care.
* Carrying out planned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision, in accordance with established nursing procedures and policies.
* Contributing towards health promotion for all patients by providing education, support and advice as necessary, ensuring referral to appropriate professionals or agencies as required.
* In the absence of senior staff, taking responsibility for delegation and supervision of appropriate work to other qualified staff, healthcare support workers and students.
* Co-ordinate a shift on a regular basis to develop leadership and management skills with the support of senior colleagues.
* Undertake named nurse responsibilities for a group of patients, monitoring their renal treatment and care interventions from the wider multidisciplinary team.
* Treat all patients with courtesy, respect individual needs, and maintain confidentiality at all times.
* Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

* Organise and participate in the delivery of high standards of evidence-based nursing care.
* Carry out planned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision, in accordance with established nursing procedures and policies.
* Report significant changes in a patient’s condition to the multidisciplinary team.
* Take charge of the ward/department in the absence of the person with continuing responsibility.
* Act as a team leader for the delivery of care in a defined area.
* Contribute to health promotion by providing education and advice; ensure referrals as required.
* Ensure safe ordering, administration and custody of medications according to Trust policies.
* In the absence of senior staff, delegate and supervise appropriate work to others.
* Assist in coordinating discharge planning with the multidisciplinary team where relevant.
* Be responsible for admission, assessment and preparation of patients undergoing treatment or investigations where relevant.
* Escort patients as required and maintain courtesy and confidentiality at all times.
* Communicate effectively with other disciplines or departments; be prepared to act in emergencies and follow emergency procedures.
* Support and direct junior staff in emergencies according to Trust policy.
* Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.
* Ensure readiness of equipment and nursing supplies in conjunction with senior ward nurses.
* Safekeep patients’ valuables and property per Trust policies.
* Report incidents or complaints to the nurse in charge and complete required documentation.
* Report damaged equipment per Trust policy.
* Know Manual Handling regulations and ensure patient manual handling assessments are carried out by staff and students as required.
* Ensure safe storage and disposal of hazardous substances and arrange disposal of sharps and waste per policy.
* Assist with stock monitoring and administration as directed, and promote efficient use of supplies.
* Be aware of ward bleep holding and staffing requirements; undertake ward administration as agreed with management.
* Report sickness promptly to enable skill mix to be maintained.

Person specification

Essential criteria

* Registered nurse with current live NMC registration
* Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable criteria

* Teaching and assessing qualification (998 or equivalent) or willing to undertake after 2 years post-registration
* Renal competencies and/or course

Work Experience

Essential criteria

* Completion of training for extended ward/department roles (e.g., IV drug administration, cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, history taking and physical examination competency)
* Currently working in an acute hospital setting as a Qualified Nurse or a qualifying student

Desirable criteria

* Experience in renal haemodialysis

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria

* Advanced communication skills, verbal and written, including report writing and record keeping
* Basic IT skills with willingness to develop (Lorenzo, ICE, EDMS, etc.)
* Time management and problem solving
* Ability to organise own workload
* Interest in teaching and participation in learning activities
