You will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with acute medical conditions, ensuring that they receive a second-to-none standard of care from admission to discharge. You will work closely with other consultants, resident doctors, and multi-disciplinary teams to ensure patient pathways operate unhindered. The Acute Medicine department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is a dynamic department known for taking a hands-on role in service development, quality improvement, education and training.

In December 2022, we opened the doors to our brand-new Acute Medical Unit (AMU) that boasts 36 assessment spaces, split across level 2 and level 3, and that houses our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) facility. We also take responsibility for additional Acute Medicine capacity on our 24-bed EAU4 (Emergency Assessment Unit).

The team is responsible for the care of patients across these areas alongside providing an Acute Medicine in-reach service in the Emergency Department during daytime hours.


Responsibilities

* Highest-quality care to patients, prioritising their safety and dignity.
* Authentic, confident leadership.
* In-depth teaching and training to under/postgraduates and supervising our Resident and Specialty Doctors.
* Positive/active engagement in departmental governance and improvement.
* Effective liaison with all manner of operational, clinical and support teams across the service.
* Constructive participation in audit and quality assurance processes.
* Provide high-quality consultant-delivered care to patients requiring the service, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are met.
* Take responsibility for the management of patients admitted on the medical take, post-take ward round (PTWR), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Emergency Assessment Unit.
* Provide teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
* Supervise and train the junior clinical team and our specialty doctors.
* Be proactive in the Department's clinical governance agenda and take on leadership roles to support continuous learning and improvement, thereby abiding by the clinical and corporate governance policies of the Trust.
* Liaise with clinicians and managers within and outside the Department to address any issues arising that may affect the service.
* Participate in relevant audit and quality assurance processes.

Clinical staff: Recruitment, appointment and educational supervision including educational contracts, regular appraisal, organisation of study leave, annual leave and rotas.

Budget: Work collaboratively with the Operational Manager, Associate Medical Director & Associate Director of Operations to manage services within allocated resource.

Communication: This will include the responsibility for and arrangement of communication and liaison with all other medical and service departments within the Trust and other Trusts.

Teaching: To have an active role in the resident doctor training programme.

Acute Medicine benefits from an experienced and knowledgeable leadership team that has a strong working relationship with the Trust senior leadership and executive team through its work in development of our acute services. Acute Medicine is well known as a nurturing and supportive department both for senior medical staff and for doctors in training. We work collaboratively with the well-established multidisciplinary teams of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and discharge coordinators on our Emergency Assessment Unit and Acute Medical Unit, all of which maintain a strong culture of safety and professionalism.
