Clinical Director for Urgent Care
Deliver transformative change to Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s urgent treatment centres and "front door" service.
Main duties of the job
* Maximise efficiency across urgent care, and reduce waiting times
* Seek opportunities to effectively manage patient flow, including redirection of patients to the most appropriate service
* Integrate urgent care and access with neighbourhood working, in line with the NHS 10‑year plan
* Enhance GP links with Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)
* Support winter preparedness, strategic development of urgent care services in line with national strategy and local priorities
* Review and develop internal and external pathways
* Oversight and delivery of effective access and streaming to appropriate services, ensuring patients are seen by the right service and the right clinician
* Maximise the efficiency of urgent care, and support achievement of performance targets and KPIs
* Work as part of the wider system to develop the urgent care service, including General Practice, Community Services and Integrated Neighbourhood Teams
* Provide medical leadership in the planning, implementation and monitoring of service delivery
* Effectively network and work collaboratively with internal and external partners to effect change and develop services
* Work closely with the GP Governance Lead to deliver effective and high‑quality GP input across urgent care
* Support workforce development and training
* Develop relationships and work effectively across departments, including with the Clinical Director for Urgent and Emergency Care within the Clinical Board, Clinical Board Chair for Medicine, Emergency Care and Community, Board Director of Operations, Matrons, Head of Nursing, General Manager and service leads
* Complete clinical sessions across the UTC sites
* Comply with all Trust policies and procedures
* Ensure the handling of highly sensitive and confidential information is managed correctly and securely in line with statutory and Trust policy
* Promote and maintain a positive culture which supports the Trust’s values and prioritises staff well‑being
* Work within applicable regulations, governance arrangements and ethical frameworks
Qualifications and experience required
* Experience of transformative clinical leadership
* Experience in leading complex change management
* Demonstrates a high level of professional practice and experience in disease management
* Experience of collaborative and multidisciplinary team working
* Previous and current experience of working in primary care and an urgent care setting, including management of acute illness/injury in the UK, with the ability and willingness to travel to sites
* Member of defence union (MPS/MDU)
* Evidence of an annual NHS appraisal
* Fully Qualified GP MRCGP for at least 3 years
* GMC full registration and currently on a performers list
* Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)
* Evidence of a commitment to continuing professional development
* Possess a valid UK work permit (if appropriate)
* Higher postgraduate educational activities in relevant fields (optional)
