The role

The Role

We are recruiting for an Anatomy Teaching Fellow for our Newcastle, UK campus.

This post is offered on a one-year fixed term contract commencing in August 2026. There is potential for a second year in the post, subject to satisfactory performance in the role.

For this post we require highly motivated and enthusiastic doctors, who will be an important part of the School of Medicine team in Newcastle,

  • This fixed-term development post offers doctors, with an interest in teaching, the opportunity to take time away from clinical practice to enhance their teaching skills, before returning to clinical practice as a more developed clinical educator
  • For this reason, previous holders of either our clinical teaching fellow role or our anatomy teaching fellow role are not eligible to apply,
  • You will be involved in the delivery of our MBBS curriculum to year 1 and 2 medical students for clinical skills,
  • You will have the opportunity to contribute to education research projects and to the development of teaching and learning activities and resources,
  • You will also be offered the opportunity to undertake the Certificate in Clinical Education,
  • You are expected to have an MBBS degree, to be clinically active with a license to practice, to have relevant experience in the NHS, and to have completed your Foundation training (or equivalent) by August 2026,
  • There are no clinical, patient-facing duties within the clinical teaching fellow role.

    Key Accountabilities

    Responsible to the Head of School, you will:

  • Work as part of a team of teaching fellows who make an important contribution to developing, coordinating and delivering the undergraduate teaching programme at Newcastle
  • Predominantly teach small groups in the classroom, or anatomy department
  • Provide pastoral support and academic mentoring to students
  • Engage in medical education research under supervision from senior colleagues
  • Contribute to faculty development opportunities, including peer observation of teaching, to develop your teaching skills
  • Undertake other teaching, academic and administrative duties as seen necessary by the Head of School including student admissions, recruitment, appraisal, mentoring and assessment.
  • Undertake the during this period. If you already have this qualification (or equivalent), you may be able to undertake another Diploma of Medical Education
  • Work towards which would be fully funded

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Clinically active in the UK NHS
  • Knowledge of clinical skills and anatomy in current medical practice
  • Experience of teaching MBBS or other students
  • Experience of teaching in a hospital or general practice
  • Willingness to engage in continuing professional development and learn and develop new skills and expertise
  • An active interest in current developments in the medical education development arena
  • Excellent organisation, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Desirable:

  • Experience of offering effective student support and guidance.
  • Attributes and Behaviours

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues as part of a team
  • Ability to manage their time efficiently and to work flexibly, according to teaching workload
  • Ability to respond enthusiastically and positively to students
  • Sensitivity to the views of others
  • Qualifications

  • Medical Degree
  • Full registration with the UK General Medical Council
  • Successful completion of UK Foundation training (or equivalent) by August 2026
