Youwill need to demonstrate a high level of manual dexterity, a workingknowledge of technical procedures relevant to prosthodontic technology, goodcommunication skills and knowledge of laboratory health and safety.Experience of working effectively with a range of laboratory materials isrequired and as CadCam techniques are increasingly being incorporated withinthe workflow, some prior knowledge and experience of such technology may beadvantageous, though not essential at this time.

Main duties of the job
Thepost holder will be responsible for the production of a broad range ofremovable full and partial acrylic and metal based dentures plus repairs,relines, additions, bite raisers, splints, stents, study models articulationsetc.
Supportand encouragement for personal development will be given with potential forinvolvement in some of the more complex prosthodontic work and where possiblethe opportunity to undertake further qualifications relevant to the post.

2. JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY
Support the work of the relevanttechnical department in the effective and timely production of custom mademedical devices and other technical work including:
(Conservation Posts) a range ofsingle crown & bridge units, post & cores, temporary units, biteraisers, splints, study models, Denar articulations and diagnostic wax-upunits for clinical treatment planning, plus some of the more complex crown andbridge work as appropriate for own development.
(Prosthodontic Posts) a range ofremovable full and partial acrylic and metal based dentures, repairs,relines, additions, bite raisers, splints, study models and articulations.May also include also some of the more complex prosthodontic work as appropriatefor own development.
(Orthodontic posts) a range ofremovable appliances, immediate retainers, vacuum formed appliances, biteraisers, splints, study models and repairs, plus some of the more complexorthodontic work as appropriate for own development.
To develop own skills, knowledgeand experience within dental technology and to keep abreast of new anddeveloping technologies. An example of this is in the use of Cad-Camtechnology which is increasingly being used with in our production workflows.
Customer base is approximately 470undergraduate dental students and approximately 100 postgraduate students andclinical staff, within several clinical specialities including Conservation,Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontology, Childrens, Acute Care, andSedation. Work load and type may vary throughout the year depending uponacademic and clinical requirements and trends and a flexible approach will berequired.

4. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OFRESPONSIBILITY
To provide technical support in thelaboratory to major specialised services, producing a range of dentaltechnical work and some specialised work as required.
To attend appropriate departmentalmeetings as required
To ensure the equipment used withinthe laboratory is in safe working order, reporting defects to the Head oftechnical services and / or LDI Workshop.
To partake in the routinemaintenance of laboratory equipment (eg replacing dust filters, cleaning sandblasters etc) and keep personal work areas clean and tidy.
To comply with the requirements ofthe Medical Devices Directive within the Prosthodontic Laboratory, ensuringappropriate quality records are kept and procedures adhered to.
To follow Health and Safetystandards in all areas of the dental laboratory, where all technical staffuse a range of potentially hazardous materials and equipment and mayencounter highly unpleasant fumes and body fluids.
To undertake appropriate trainingand participate in regular appraisals to:

11. COMMUNICATION & WORKINGRELATIONSHIPS
Thepost-holder can expect to liaise daily with all members of the dentallaboratory staff group (shown on the organisational chart). There will alsobe regular contact with dental clinical staff, students, tutors and nurses.Occasionally there may be a requirement to communicate with other staff ofthe Dental Hospital such as maintenance staff, porters, domestic or adminstaff.
Methodsof communication will predominantly involve face to face discussion andwritten / printed documentation but may also include other media includinge-mail, telephone, etc.
12. SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
i) PHYSICAL EFFORT: The role involves avery high degree of manual dexterity and hand to eye co-ordination. The postholder is responsible for producing custom- made dental appliances many ofwhich are very intricate in their nature for example the carving ofindividual teeth in wax, working with delicate precision attachments andimplant components or manipulating fine wires to make clasps and springs fordental appliances, all of which alsorequires a high degree of accuracy. This element of the job will occur forseveral hours each day, usually whilst sitting which can have a detrimentaleffect in terms of neck and back discomfort or pain and other relatedpostural problems. Additionally the nature of this work often gives rise toeye strain and discomfort.
Otheraspects of the role involve standing for up to an hour at a time whilstcasting dental impressions and other plaster work.
ii) MENTAL EFFORT: The intricacy andaccuracy of the work requires periods of intense concentration on a dailybasis, usually for up to a half of the working day.
Manyof the appliances made by the post holder are non-routine and requiredetailed planning and consideration with regards to the design. The majorityof appliances require discussion between the post holder and the dentalclinician or clinical undergraduate, who, as a trainee dentist is reliant onthe expertise and advice of the post holder to ensure that the appropriateinformation is recorded when the patient is present.
Regularinterruptions to work from clinical staff, nurses and reception staff are thenorm.
iii) EMOTIONAL EFFORT: Generally, emotional effort is rare. Therole involves occasional contact with patients, some of whom have hadtraumatic or surgical loss of dental or facial tissue. The extent to whichthis may affect the post holder is a matter of conjecture.
iv) WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequent regular use of a range ofpotentially hazardous materials including acids, methyl methacrylate andother solvents and may encounter highly unpleasant dust and fumes.
Alsohandles dental impressions and other components on a daily basis which may becontaminated with body fluids including blood and saliva.
Frequentregular use of high speed rotating cutting and grinding instruments and machinery and also metalmelting and casting equipment.
All risks are minimised by strictHealth and Safety procedures which includes the need to wear full facevisors, dust masks and gloves often for several hours each day. Thisprolonged use of PPE can be restrictive making working conditions lesscomfortable
