Postdoctoral research associate grade 7

Liverpool (Merseyside)
University of Liverpool
Research associate
£35,000 - £40,000 a year
Posted: 1 October
Offer description

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented, organised and highly motivated Post-Doctoral Research Associate with a keen interest in cell biology and ATMP development to join the team on a Glaucoma UK Project Grant in the Department of Eye and Vision Science at the University of Liverpool. You will join the research groups of Dr Lucy Bosworth (biomaterials and tissue engineering), Dr Carl Sheridan (ocular cell biology) and Dr Neeru Vallabh (glaucoma consultant ophthalmologist). The aim of this multidisciplinary project is to develop the first bioengineered minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) device ¿ the LIVTM - that biologically restores diseased trabecular meshwork function rather than simply bypassing it.

Based on the main University of Liverpool campus, you will conduct laboratory experiments and determine the feasibility of delivering a cell-loaded scaffold into the trabecular meshwork space and assess its viability, retention, and functional integration using ex vivo eye globes and tissues. The data generated from this proof-of-concept project will be used to support follow-on research and translational grants.

To ensure clinical relevance, you will also collaborate with patients (and clinicians) at St. Paul¿s Eye Hospital and help establish a patient focus group to co-develop this technology as an effective early intervention. Applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a PhD in a relevant scientific discipline, for example, Cell Biology-related subject, Tissue Engineering or Biomaterials. Excellent manual dexterity and experience in cell culture and models, and tissue dissection would be highly beneficial to the post. Similarly, experience in fibre fabrication and material characterisation would also be an advantage. Training and support will be provided on all aspects of the work.

The post is fixed-term, available for 12 months.

If you are still awaiting your PhD to be awarded you will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that you have been awarded your PhD, your salary will be increased to Grade 7, spine point 31.
