Overview
Aphasia Support is recruiting an experienced Speech & Language Therapist to lead on the charity's new support for people with aphasia of working age in Leeds. Funding has been secured to create three new in-person support groups across Leeds to assist people with aphasia of working age into employment, education, training and/or improved health outcomes. The post holder will work with a dedicated Community Engagement Officer for Leeds. Most support will be delivered through the three groups, with home-based or online support available for those unable to attend. Venues for the groups will be finalised by the end of September, with the start ideally in October. This is a fixed-term position until 31 March 2026.
Main duties
* Be the main point of contact for NHS referral partners and other organisations into the charity's support offering for people with aphasia of working age in Leeds.
* Complete in-person assessments for all new referrals in Leeds who meet the project eligibility criteria.
* Oversee three brand new support groups for people with aphasia of working age in Leeds.
* Ensure outcome measures are completed for each participant and that project paperwork is completed on time for reporting requirements.
* Provide guidance and mentoring for the Community Engagement Officer who is new in post.
* Complete other tasks commensurate with the role.

Aphasia Support is a forward-thinking charity whose mission is to improve the wellbeing of people with aphasia and their carers by providing tailored speech and language therapy and long-term support. We aim to create a world where every person with aphasia has access to support.
Our team includes a CEO, Fundraising & Communications Manager, 3 Community Engagement Officers, an Administrator, and other SLTs who work with us on a consultancy basis, plus over 60 volunteers.
The charity has five aims:

* To improve communication skills and wellbeing of people with aphasia
* To raise awareness and understanding of aphasia
* To improve the knowledge, skills and confidence of carers and volunteers in providing support
* To supplement NHS services by providing long-term support for people with aphasia

Person Specification
Essential
* Behaviours: Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills; be sensitive to others’ needs; ability to work within a team; demonstrate initiative, confidence, and strong time management and organisational skills.
* Practical Skills: Formulate independent clinical decisions following assessment; give clear advice, instruction and training to clients, carers and volunteers; manage time and priorities; strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
* Experience: Extensive experience as an SLT supporting people with communication difficulties such as aphasia and apraxia of speech; ability to perform specialised SLT assessments for support plans; strong knowledge of the national stroke service model and life after stroke services; strong knowledge of computer therapy apps to support communication goals including AAC; knowledge of supported conversation techniques.
* Qualifications: Recognised SLT degree accredited by RCSLT; HPC registered to practice as an SLT; registered member of RCSLT; extensive portfolio and evidence of advanced professional development.
Desirable
* Evidence of participation in service development.
UK Registration and Disclosure
Applicants must have current UK professional registration. This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and a Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) will be required.
