This role is open to all applicants. However, in line with Cornwall First recruitment principles, initial shortlisting will prioritise applicants from Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, and the Integrated Care Board for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Applications are invited for the post of Medical Laboratory Assistant to work in the Blood Sciences department at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro.

It’s an exciting time with a new Blood Sciences laboratory open covering haematology, blood transfusion and clinical chemistry. The job purpose is to provide laboratory, clerical & data entry support and reception cover as part of a laboratory team.


Main duties of the job

* The receipt of samples from within the hospital and surrounding GP practices.
* Sample preparation, request data entry and presentation for analysis as appropriate.
* To support the specific and technical and clerical duties alongsideBiomedical Scientists as part of a team to facilitate the smooth running of the service.

This is a full time post working 37.5 hours per week. A flexible attitude to working hours is essential. The hours are currently within a framework of 08.00-20.00 including weekend & Bank Holiday working. These arrangements are subject to continuing review.

Qualifications

* CSE / GCSE in 4 subjects including Maths, Science and English at grade 4 and above.
* Proven interest in Laboratory based employment.


Experience

* Experience of data entry
* Experience of using analysers


Skills

* Must be precise, methodical and dextrous
* Must have the ability to work with human fluid and tissue
* Must be able to work under pressure.
* Previous experience of following written protocols / policies
* Ability to prioritise
* Evidence of previous team working
