Clinical Imaging Assistant

Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and well-motivated individual to join our existing team of Clinical Imaging assistants.

Candidates will be expected to fully prepare patients prior to imaging, including cannulation, patient observations (ECG, BP, O2 saturations etc), BMI calculation and other general CIA duties.

In addition to patient preparation candidates will be expected to work closely with the CT radiographers in the scan rooms which will include patient positioning and assisting in interventional procedures.

The Imaging Directorate is committed to Training and Development and encourages all aspects of CPD & role extension. Full training in cannulation will be given.


Main duties of the job

To provide a high quality, responsive CT service as part of a multi-disciplinary team, whilst maintaining a high standard of patient care.

Assisting members of the CT multidisciplinary team in delivering a high standard of direct patient care and associated duties. To ensure that safe practice is carried out in accordance with departmental protocols.

The post on offer is based within CT, rotational across all 3 sites within STH, 37.5 hours per week over 7 days, to cover weekends and extended days until 8pm.

Person specification


Education and Qualifications

* NVQ3 level or equivalent
* Care Certificate from an approved awarder, or commitment to successful completion the Care Certificate within 12 weeks from start of employment
* 5 GCSE (grade 9-4 or A- C) English and Maths at grade C or above (or relevant equivalent qualification or level of ability which would include Functional Skills Level 2) or Level 2 healthcare apprenticeship
* 3 A levels or Health and Science T level or equivalent level 3 qualification or level of ability which would include Functional Skills Level 2)


Experience

* Experience of working as a clinical imaging assistant or clinical support worker
* Experience or knowledge of department procedures
* Core knowledge of clinical, technical and/or scientific roles and responsibilities, including clinical risk assessment.
* Experience of team working
* Know and understand facts, principles, processes and general concepts in diagnostic imaging or radiotherapy services


Skills and Knowledge

* IT literate and comfortable / confident with the use of computer systems
* Understanding of role boundaries and supervision and carry out appropriately delegated tasks. Able to understand protocols procedures and plans. May work autonomously or alone within scope of practice/ role.
* Act as mentor/ supervisor with respect to training of band 2 and other band 3 staff.
* Ability to exchange information with patients and carers using tact and persuasion. Can recognise the need for a translator/hearing/other support service.
* Able to undertake frequent periods of physical activity e.g., moving and assisting patients as required with or without mechanical aids or pushing trolleys and lifting equipment
* Ability to perform basic routine tasks such as checking deliveries, completing paperwork, and storing stock correctly, checking availability of reports/clinical information and managing patient documentation
* Knowledge and experience in a range of delegated clinical imaging duties relevant to the work area e.g., recording blood pressure, pregnancy tests, interventional procedures, document specimen, drawing up correct drugs for procedure, including undertaking IV canulation depending on departmental needs.
* Contributes to audits and service evaluation and quality improvement activities such as service user feedback.
* Knowledge of performing basic life support
* Ability to analyse and provide judgements related to basic test results
