Job overview

Pharmacy at the Manor Hospital Walsall is looking for an experienced pharmacy technician to work as a band 5 enhanced role in medicines management.

Applicants will need to have knowledge and skills and experience to apply to the dispensing of medicines working with complex requests, supply of stock medicines including using automation at ward level accommodating seasonal trends in usage and coordinating the workflow in the dispensary. There is an opportunity to undertake quality improvement projects to make positive changes in medicines supply and patient benefits.

Our ward based services have evolved to working at the patients bedside and with nursing staff, to ensure patients receive a positive experience in hospital with their medicines, including on how to use them correctly.


Main duties of the job

You will perform duties required in your role as a pharmacy technician including accuracy checking of prescriptions and supporting the medicines management team to fully utilise available resources.

Your role will include supporting the training of our students and apprentices as part of your daily work.

You will be working in the DIspensary, Wards, procurement, distribution. We provide services to Hospices that will also form part of your work.

The main function we are integrating is working with nursing staff and our pharmacy teams at ward level to ensure the dispensing of patient specific medicines are done to meet administration times. You will also participate in ward audits to ensure the criteria is followed within the Trust medicines policy.

The Pharmacy has progressed with its workforce skill mix introducing new roles and investing in the training and development of staff.

We give opportunity for staff to progress onto new roles facilitated learning learning and mentoring.

We are supporting our ward based teams to work at the patient bedside using technology that is efficient, effective and responds to the needs of the patient and the Hospital.

We support our staff to familiarise themselves with technology and support them in their daily work as we use a Robot in the dispensary and automated cabinets at ward level and in the dispensary CD cabinets.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To be the first line for the referral of problem relating to prescriptions and to be able to investigate supply difficulties and assist with complex technical issues.
2. To be able to assist pharmacy staff in dealing with difficult or dissatisfied patients, carers or other healthcare staff.
3. To assist the Technical Managers and Team Leaders by identifying areas of pressure and reorganising work, seeking help or reallocating tasks through delegation.
4. To supervise staff in the dispensary and wards for daily workload to be managed
5. Assists in the provision and development of a scheme to provide the extended use of patient own medicines.
6. Create Patient Profile by checking Patients own medicines and speaking to the patient .
7. Checks the suitability of patients own medicine for continued use.
8. Assists in the provision of one-stop dispensing to the wards ensuring that the patient has enough medicine for discharge as well as for inpatient use.
9. Checks patient’s charts to review their medicine, referring new patients/medication or any queries to the ward pharmacist.
10. Dispenses medicine for the wards, labelling appropriately.
11. Counsel patients on use of their medicines.
12. Refers interventions to ward pharmacist.
13. To maintain the ward stock lists, liaising with Ward Pharmacists, Technical Managers etc. and adding/deleting items as appropriate. Advising wards and departments on safe and secure storage of medicines including all temperature monitoring.
14. To assist the Team Leaders/Technical Managers with timetabling the ward top-up visits, adjusting for bank holidays and other pressures.
15. To be aware of transport schedules and liaising closely with delivery staff to ensure work is ready on time.
16. To be the first line in dealing with supply problems for wards and departments.

Qualifications

17. BTEC and NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent qualification
