Overview
Engineering Design Services, Warwickshire County Council (WCC) is a civil engineering business unit within the Local Authority. The core business is comprised of the design and construction of new highway improvement schemes, but also design and maintenance of the County's highway structure assets and traffic control and information systems. This year WCC are aiming to appoint four new Graduate Engineers. The proposed posts will be in the Highways Capital Delivery, Bridge & Structural Design, and Bridge Maintenance teams.
Team Details
The Highways Capital Delivery team in Engineering Design Services comprises new and experienced engineers dedicated to project delivery at both the design and construction phase. Its aim is to improve safety, tackle congestion and enhance travel opportunities in the county. Projects include new link roads, junction improvements, cycle schemes, traffic safety schemes and town centre regeneration schemes.
The Bridge and Structural Design Team are responsible for the technical design of new highway structures often working as part of large integrated teams including a wide range of engineering disciplines. Projects range from new highway and drainage infrastructure to the improvement or replacement of existing structural assets which are close to end of life or require a change in use.
The Bridge Maintenance Team plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, functionality, and longevity of the county's highway structures. The team is responsible for the inspection, assessment, and maintenance of thousands of the county's highway structures, ranging from historic bridges that are centuries old to modern reinforced concrete and steel constructions. Successful candidates will gain hands‑on experience in structural asset management, working alongside experienced professionals to monitor the condition of infrastructure and plan interventions that prevent deterioration and extend service life.

The role offers a unique opportunity to develop technical and practical skills in a real‑world environment, while contributing to the preservation of critical infrastructure assets across the county.
As a graduate civil engineer at Warwickshire County Council, you will be joining our diverse engineering team, assisting other Engineers in the delivery of projects ranging from small highway improvement schemes to multi‑million‑pound infrastructure projects. Typically, the day‑to‑day work for the successful candidates can involve any stage of a project including:
Responsibilities
1. Production of feasibility studies for new schemes.
2. Technical design of new highways and structures using a broad range of techniques, including advanced structural modelling software and calculations.
3. Communicating and liaising with a wide range of stakeholders and members of the public.
4. Preparing and tendering construction contracts, including drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
5. Construction site supervision and contract administration.
Qualifications
* Can solve a variety of complex problems, both technical and non‑technical.
* Are great communicators, with the ability to engage with a range of audiences.
* Are well‑organised, with the ability to manage and maintain all types of project documentation.
* Have experience using software such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) or structural analysis software like Midas, Civil 3D, or similar.
Applicants will need to hold a valid UK or EU passport or visa to work in the UK. Preferably a full UK driving licence or an intention to acquire one in the near future, as sites are located across Warwickshire.
Ideally, you will be completing, or have already completed, an ICE accredited BEng or BSc course and will have studied modules applicable to the type of work undertaken by Warwickshire County Council.
