Bank Specialist Occupational Therapist

Closing date: 22 March 2026

Band: 6 (£38,682 - £46,580 per annum pro rata)

Hours: Zero hours per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working.

The Therapy Services at Milton Keynes University Hospital are looking for registered Occupational Therapists to join our staff bank at band 7.

Clinical areas available:

* Acute Stroke Unit
* Outpatient Hand therapy unit – providing rehab post‑surgery and trauma
* Inpatient complex medicine
* Respiratory and surgical wards
* Acute Assessment & Frailty Team

We are looking for dynamic individuals who want to join our services and work alongside the substantive workforce in providing rehabilitation and care of a wide variety of patients across different services.

We support flexible working so will consider applicants who have specific shift requirements to suit their work life balance.

Note: We are unable to offer sponsorship for this role.


Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be highly motivated, flexible and an innovative therapist. Excellent communication, time management and organisational skills are essential, and you should be able to work on your own initiative and as part of a team.

* Manage your own workload and maintain legal accountability for all aspects of your work.
* Undertake comprehensive assessments for patients, including those with complex presentations, using advanced investigative and analytical skills.
* Formulate individualised management and treatment plans, utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options to create a specialised programme of care.
* Signpost patients to other specialist or allied services for re‑valuation as appropriate.

We offer several support and development opportunities, including in‑service training, clinical supervision, leadership development sessions and support from our Therapy Practice Education team, all of which are available to bank staff also.

As a medium‑sized general hospital, we provide a full range of general medical and surgical services, including a busy Emergency Department, Maternity, and Paediatrics. Further investment is underway, including the construction of Oak Wards – a new ward block featuring two 24‑bed wards – and the recently approved Women and Children's Centre, set to open by 2030.

Person Specification


Qualifications and knowledge

* Occupational Therapy Degree or equivalent professional qualification
* Registered with UK Health Care Professions Council
* Evidence of post registration CPD
* Awareness of NHS & Trust systems, policies, procedures & current changes
* Membership of Specialist Interest Groups
* Sound therapeutic & clinical knowledge relevant to clinical area of speciality
* Knowledge of physiotherapy best practice for clinical area of speciality
* Fieldwork education training
* Membership of BOAT
* Membership of Specialist Interest Groups


Experience

* Relevant experience in hospital setting
* Minimum of 6 months experience of working in an Acute OT role
* Experience of working in area of clinical speciality
* Experience of working in Elderly Care
* Experience of providing support and education to patients and carers
* Experience of cognitive assessments
* Experience of wheelchair and adaptive equipment assessment and provision
* Active member of multi-disciplinary team
* Supervision & training of assistants, junior members of staff and students
* Able to independently manage caseload to include complex patients
* Undertaken project within area e.g. best practice project, guideline benchmarking, audit


Skills

* Ability to build and develop effective working relationships and motivate staff
* IT literacy (Microsoft Word, e‑mail and Internet)
* Ability to work under pressure
* Excellent personal organisation and time management skills
* Excellent problem‑solving skills
* Ability to cope with unpredictable and emergency situations
* Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
* Ability to interpret, analyse and respond effectively to complex information
* Ability to appreciate the sensitivity and complexity of patient cultures and be able to provide a service appropriate to individual needs
