Services Welfare Officer

Salary of £24,355 per annum, increasing to £26,651 after successful completion of the 6‑month probationary period. Based at a military base in the UK, with relocation to a new site every two years.

We provide vital welfare support to armed forces personnel at military bases within the UK and overseas.


Responsibilities

* Manage the WRVS facility on a military site.
* Provide independent, confidential, and sensitive welfare support.
* Support service personnel on a one‑to‑one basis and help them find solutions to personal and practical issues.
* Use judgement to signpost personnel to other support agencies or military colleagues as appropriate.
* Update line manager regularly on all issues relating to the service and centre, including self‑harm, investigations or media interest.
* Work closely with the Chain of Command, particularly the Unit Welfare Officer, and attend unit meetings as required.
* Build good working relationships with other welfare agencies involved at the unit.
* Be aware of MoD structure and other support agencies to make appropriate referrals to third parties.
* Make suitable recommendations to the Unit and line manager for improving the centre and tailoring activities to unit requirements.
* Deliver induction presentations to service personnel.
* Represent Services Welfare at formal mess functions, external events and MoD shows/exhibitions.
* Attend appropriate Services Welfare training courses and inform line manager of attendance.
* Provide out‑of‑hours support when required, ensuring call‑outs are monitored.
* Attend exercises requiring welfare support, with costs financed by the Unit.
* Conduct welfare visits in line with the unit’s requirements.
* Maintain housekeeping of the centre to a high standard.
* Ensure health and safety practices are implemented and observed; report accidents and incidents.
* Wear the appropriate uniform provided by Services Welfare during working hours and when representing WRVS.
* Perform any other duties reasonably requested by Services Welfare management.


Hours

36 hours per week over 6 days, including evenings and weekends.


Qualifications & Experience

* Broad experience working with young adults or more experienced service personnel in a welfare setting.
* Previous experience in youth and community work, social work, counselling, education or healthcare settings.
* Experience working with young or 'at risk' adults.
* Experience of effective networking with other agencies.
* Prepared to live in one‑person accommodation (provided).
* Flexibility to relocate to any location within the UK or overseas for prolonged periods of time, up to two years.
* Basic IT skills.
* Full, valid driving licence.
* Valid UK passport.
* Demonstrated flexibility to relocate on short notice.
* Self‑motivated and approachable.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong time‑management, planning, and prioritisation abilities.
* Ability to demonstrate confidentiality when dealing with sensitive issues.
* Good track record of working effectively within a team.
* Relevant qualification in youth work, social work, teaching, or a similar area (beneficial but not essential).
