We are looking for a senior interaction designer to join our community of interaction and content designers supporting our digital transformation programme. This role offers the chance to work on impactful services at scale, within a government setting that values design. Learn more about designing in government on our Design in Government blog.
As a senior designer at the Intellectual Property Office, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including researchers and developers, to deliver user-centred public services aligned with the Government Design Principles. Your focus will be on designing scalable services, helping transform government service delivery to be more efficient, simpler, faster, and user-friendly.
You will play a key role in establishing best practices and standards, supporting the professional growth of user-centred design through peer support, mentoring, and training.
Working Style
This role follows IPO's hybrid working model, requiring at least 20% onsite presence at our Newport Office. Candidates are encouraged to discuss flexible working arrangements with the recruiting manager.
Main Duties
1. Work in agile, multidisciplinary teams to develop design concepts rapidly within transformation programmes.
2. Collaborate with service managers and programme directors on design development.
3. Promote high-quality, consistent user experiences through reusable design elements and best practices across the IPO.
4. Support, mentor, and train other designers, fostering best practice.
5. Manage and support the development of HEO interaction designers.
6. Develop and promote user-centred design standards and lead the IPO’s design community of practice.
7. Ensure accessibility and inclusion in designs, complying with legal and security standards.
8. Participate in user research, develop prototypes, and test design ideas.
9. Discuss and justify design decisions based on evidence and research.
10. Design interactions across channels and devices, informed by user insights.
11. Contribute to the UK Design System and ensure services meet the UK Service Standard, providing evidence during assessments.
Essential Criteria
* Design communication: Experience creating user-centred deliverables to explain complex ideas to stakeholders.
* Designing for everyone: Advising on accessible solutions across channels to meet customer needs.
* Strategic design: Using and promoting the GOV.UK Design System and principles, recommending updates or new patterns.
* Collaborative design: Working within agile, multidisciplinary teams across project boundaries.
* Evidence-based design: Conducting usability testing, either directly or with user researchers.
* Iterative design: Prototyping complex ideas independently, mentoring others in HTML and CSS.
* Leadership: Leading community activities and setting design standards.
* Management: Supporting team members' development, HR processes, and performance discussions (training provided).
