About Florio

We’re using golf to shift the culture around mental health and stop silence costing lives.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK. Every 90 minutes, another person dies by suicide. Golf brings together the demographic most at risk, which gives the sport a rare chance to reach people where they already feel at home.

We believe golf can play a real role in tackling this crisis, by getting more of us talking, listening, and looking out for each other.

We work with clubs, players and partners to build a culture where people look out for each other, talk openly, and find support when they need it. We’ve launched Healthy Minds GC, a first-of-its-kind mental health hub for golfers, and we’re also getting ready to pilot a grassroots club programme that equips golf clubs with tools, training and clear signposting.

We are now in the process of registering as a charity (CIO) and building our founding Board of Trustees to help turn momentum into a safe, credible, long-term force for good.

The Role

This is a chance to join at a defining moment as a founding trustee. You will help turn a creative, culture-shifting idea into a well-governed charity with real impact in golf.

You will sit on a small, hands-on board, working with the founder and CEO to set direction, build strong foundations, and ensure we grow with integrity, purpose and measurable outcomes. You will help design the structures and decisions that define who we become, from governance and partnerships to tone and standards.

What you’ll do

* Support and advise on Florio’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
* Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor progress against them.
* Oversee financial plans, budgets, and risk management.
* Ensure Florio operates legally, ethically, and efficiently.
* Provide support and constructive challenge to the CEO.
* Help identify and manage key risks, including safeguarding, finance, and reputation.
* Review and approve Florio’s financial statements.
* Contribute to the evolution of Florio’s governance and impact framework.
* Represent Florio externally, helping grow our network, partnerships, and influence.
* Act as an ambassador for the charity’s mission, tone and culture.

As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve reviewing materials, helping test new ideas, or providing advice and guidance around areas the trustee has special expertise.

Who we’re looking for

We want people who bring energy, judgment and curiosity, and who broaden the perspectives around the table.

We’d especially love to hear from people with experience in:

* Finance or charity governance
* Partnerships, fundraising, or community development
* Communications, marketing, or creative industries
* Safeguarding, mental health, or wellbeing
* Sport, golf, or player welfare

What matters most:

* Committed to making mental health part of everyday life in golf
* Clear-thinking, collaborative, and able to decide under uncertainty
* Honest, with humour and humanity in how you lead
* Actively committed to equity, diversity and inclusion

Previous board experience is useful, not essential. Lived experience of mental health challenges or caring roles is very welcome. Golf experience is welcome, not required.

Legal duties (Charity Commission)

* Act only in the charity’s best interests.
* Manage resources responsibly and comply with the law.
* Ensure accountability for money, people, information and impact.
* Follow the constitution and act with reasonable care and skill.

What to expect

* This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
* Four board meetings per year, plus one longer annual session (virtual or in person).
* Occasional calls or contributions between meetings.
