Principal Clinical Scientist in Non‑Ionising Radiation Physics
University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust invites applications for a Principal Clinical Scientist position within the Clinical Measurement and Innovation (CM&I) team. The role focuses on non‑ionising radiation (NIR) safety, optimisation and research.
Job Summary
We seek a dynamic, HCPC‑registered Clinical Scientist to lead NIR work streams, supervise junior staff and develop advanced QA methods. Ideal candidates have significant experience in NIR and are capable of serving as a Band 7 scientist on a development pathway.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead UV and US physics services (Medical Physicist in Phototherapies / Ultrasound).
* Act as Assistant MR Safety Expert (SE for MRI, UV, LASER and Ultrasound safety and quality.
* Carry out acceptance testing and establish baseline performance criteria, including device calibration.
* Manage routine QA tests, data analysis and patient dosimetry.
* Develop novel or advanced QA tests and investigate image‑quality artefacts.
* Support clinical protocol implementation and optimisation across MRI, UV and US modalities.
* Advise on safety policies across all imaging modalities.
* Teach, mentor and train trainees and staff.
* Initiate research, development and innovation projects, contributing to service improvement.
* Participate in scientific conferences and publish original work.
* Provide line‑management duties as required.
Person Specification
* Essential Skills and Experience
* Advanced knowledge of NIR safety, optimisation and physics.
* Proven experience in MR imaging technologies and image‑processing software.
* Experience in safety measurement for NIR equipment and compliance with legislation.
* Evidence of HCPC registration and relevant medical physics qualifications.
* Strong IT skills (Office, specialist software).
* Excellent communication, teamwork and teaching ability.
* Patient focus and professional integrity.
* Experience supervising junior Clinical Scientists.
* Writing, reviewing and presenting research.
* Desirable Qualifications and Experience
* PhD or equivalent.
* MRSE certificate from IPEM.
* Laser protection advisor certification (RPA2000).
* Proven publication record.
Training and Development
Continuing professional development, conference attendance and participation in research projects are supported. The role includes teaching and training within the CM&I department.
Funding and Contracts
Band 8a; salary £55,690‑£62,682 per annum. Permanent, full‑time position. Working pattern includes full days; flexible arrangements may be considered.
