Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to join our hardworking and dynamic team. The Macmillan Cancer Support Worker will be an integral part of the Macmillan Information and Support Centres team, working in The Friarage Hospital Macmillan Information and Support Centre.

Excellent communication and organisational skills are sought to provide high quality services to patients, carers and families and ensure that all users are treated with empathy and care. The suitable candidate will be able to work on their own initiative. They must be resilient enough to cope with people who are often upset, angry or distressed and be able to juggle competing demands. They should be a confident IT user and able to speak professionally and sensitively on the telephone.

Main duties of the job

The Macmillan Information and Support Centres team is a caring, responsive and dynamic team who seek to offer the highest standards of support and professionalism to those who access their services.

The job will entail providing face to face, email and telephone advice and support to those affected by cancer. The postholder will provide verbal and written information about local services, refer to other organisations where appropriate, manage appointments for the benefits advice service and oversee volunteer work in the centre.

Leadership and Improvement Training

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust offers leadership and improvement training to all new staff to the Trust; this training programme has been designed to support our leaders in developing their understanding of leadership and management skills. You will be expected to attend the New and Aspiring leaders programme, and the Foundation Quality Improvement Programme that the Trust delivers. After you complete this one and a half day of training you will be able to explore further leadership and improvement training opportunities, we offer further in-house courses and bitesize programmes and leadership apprenticeships at level 3,5 and 7.

1. GCSE in Maths and English (A-C/4-9) or Functional Skills (level 2)

Knowledge

2. Experience of administration / organisational skills
3. Understanding of the local and national cancer information & support agenda.
4. Fully conversant with Windows computer software including Word, Access, Excel and Power point
5. Ability to communicate face to face or via telephone.
6. Ability to communicate with a wide range of people in an empathetic way.

7. Experience of administrative type roles.
8. Experience of roles using IT systems, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
