GR - Trainee Operating Department (Theatre) Practitioner (ODP)
We are pleased to offer a Graduate Apprenticeship Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Operating Department Practice in partnership with the University of the West of Scotland. The programme runs for three years, beginning September 2026, and combines 20% online theory with 80% clinical work‑based learning across NHS Lothian.
As an ODP you will work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team supporting patients through the anaesthetic, surgical and post‑anaesthetic phases of care.
Contract: Permanent. Hours: Full time, 36‑hour week.
Responsibilities
* Assist in the delivery of peri‑operative care across all phases (anaesthetic, surgical, post‑anaesthetic).
* Maintain patient safety, infection control and clinical standards.
* Support senior staff through continuous learning and reflective practice.
* Use digital systems, information technology and email for clinical documentation.
Qualifications & Entry Criteria
* SQA National Qualifications: Passes in five subjects, including three at higher level, or GCSE/GCE in four subjects with one at A‑Level.
* For those without the standard entry, a minimum of one year’s relevant work experience plus DipHE entry criteria (five subjects including two at higher level or equivalent SVQ, HNC, HND) will be considered.
* English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS Level 7 (overall score ≥ 6.5).
Academic Programme Fees
Eligible students will receive funding through the Scottish Funding Council (SAAS) for residents in Scotland. Unfunded applicants must self‑fund. Details are available on the SAAS website.
Benefits
The training pay is a percentage of the pay band maximum and rises progressively:
* Up to 12 months before completion: 75 % of the fully qualified rate.
* More than 12 to 24 months: 70 % of the qualified rate.
* More than 24 to 36 months: 65 % of the qualified rate.
All trainees will have the opportunity to apply for Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration upon successful completion.

Applications are accepted until the vacancy is filled. Interviews will be held on 22 and 23 June, with no alternative dates offered. Successful candidates must supply original identification and academic documents within ten working days.
