DWP. Digital with Purpose.
We're looking for an outstanding Senior Technical Lead, who wants to contribute to demanding and exciting digital services for the UK Government.
We're using fresh ideas and leading-edge tech to build and maintain digital solutions that will be used by nearly every person in the UK, every day and at key moments in their lives.
DWP is the UK's largest government department. We help people into work and make payments worth over £195bn a year to support and empower millions of people.
The scale of what we do is extraordinary, and our purpose is unique. We'd love you to join us.
What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?
* Significant experience in platform transformation, ideally transitioning from monolithic to microservices architectures, with a clear appreciation of the impact on data design, consistency, resilience, and scalability.
* Experience of cloud-native engineering; hands-on experience of cloud platforms (particularly AWS), including infrastructure-as-code (e.g. Terraform), CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitLab CI), and secure deployment practices.
* Awareness of industry standards for data security, compliance, and disaster recovery, and experience applying these in enterprise environments.
* Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to optimise data storage, retrieval, and query efficiency across distributed systems.
* Significant experience in providing technical leadership and mentoring in complex, multidisciplinary environments, and how you've influenced engineering standards and practices across teams. We're particularly interested in how you've collaborated with stakeholders to align technical decisions with business goals.
You and your role
We're on the lookout for a brilliant Senior Technical Lead to help us build digital services that really make a difference, especially for people going through tough times. You'll be shaping the future of some of the UK's most important benefit systems like Universal Credit and leading the charge on how we manage and use data across these services.
This is a big role with big impact. You'll be setting the direction for our data strategy, guiding talented engineers and making sure our systems are secure, resilient and built to last. We're talking large-scale, cloud-based platforms, event driven architectures and modern engineering practices like Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD.
You'll need to bring deep technical expertise, a strategic mindset and a collaborative approach. If you love solving complex problems, mentoring others and want to work on services that matter to millions, we want to hear from you.
Location: You'll join us in one of our brilliant digital hubs in Birmingham, Leeds, London, Manchester or Newcastle, whichever is most convenient for you.
Hybrid Working: We work a hybrid model - you'll spend some time working at home and some time collaborating face to face in a hub.
Pay: We offer competitive pay of up to £89,995.
Pension: You'll get a brilliant civil service pension with employer contributions worth 28.97%, worth over £21,000 per year.
Holidays: A generous leave package starting at 26 days rising to 31 days over time.
You can also take up to 3 extra days off a month on flexi-time. You'll also get all the usual public holidays.
We have a broad benefits package built around your work-life balance which includes:
* An award-winning environment and culture: Employer of the Year 2023 (Women In IT Awards), Founders Award for Outstanding Digital Leadership 2023 (Digital 100)
* Flexible working including flexible hours and flex-friendly policies
* Time off volunteering and charitable giving
* Bring your authentic self to work with 'I Can Be Me in DWP'
* Discounts and savings on shopping, fun days out and more
* Interest-free loans to buy a bike or a season ticket, so it's even easier for you to get to work and start making a difference
* Professional development, coaching, mentoring and career progression opportunities.
