Senior Power Electronics Engineers (AC/DC and DC/DC) – Norfolk – Permanent – Circa 55-65k

Our research and development client specialises in electric motors, controllers, and inverters for various applications. They are looking to recruit two Senior Electronics Engineers to join their Electronics Engineering team.


Job Description

Purpose

The Senior Electronic Engineer is an integral member of the project team responsible for delivering development projects of varying size and complexity. The Senior Electronics Engineer is responsible for the power electronics hardware design on multiple projects and will be responsible for the control, sensing, communications, and thermal requirements of the design under the direction of the Lead electronics engineer taking designs into production. The role reports to the Lead Electronics Engineer.


Duties

* Working closely with the Engineering team to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget. Assist the lead electronics engineer with project timelines, budgets, and resource requirements.
* Liaising with firmware team to ensure company coding standards are adhered to and resources are aligned to deliver project functional requirements.
* Designing AC/DC converters, with the application of low voltage battery charging to a written specification. Take design from concept schematic through to release for manufacture/certification using the company processes.
* Lead all manufacturing requirements and processes for AC/DC designs, including FMEA, DFM/DFA and Verification and Validation plans/reports.
* Carry out feasibility studies for new technical innovations.
* Support test engineers to carry out testing where required. Test, develop and verify design against specification in accordance with company values, policies & processes. Write test plans to a high standard with reports aligned with the verification and validation process.
* Contribute to the ongoing improvement of the standard design process.

* Ensure company standards are met for hardware designs, both regulatory & practical, in designs and design methodology.
* Power electronics development aspects of AC/DC converters and their application to battery charging and integration into motor controllers.
* Ensure deliverables are met in accordance with project plans, assess resources required to complete work packages, and communicate any problems/updates to leadership.
* Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly environment reflective of HSE principles.

Qualifications

* Degree in an engineering related discipline or relevant experience/qualification. Ideally working toward or having chartered status or equivalent.


Experience

* Essential: Experience in engineering or manufacturing environments. Experience with full-bridge, push-pull and forward isolated converters for inverter and battery charging systems (2-5 kW+ single phase), strong knowledge of LLC converters, PFC and input filtering. Experience with Li-ion, LiFePO4, and Lead Acid chemistries. Simulation experience using tools such as Simulink, MATLAB, Simetrix or LTSpice. Experience using electronics CAD software (Altium preferred). Understanding of thermal management for electronics and working in a multi-disciplinary team to solve thermal design challenges. Familiar with New Product Introduction (NPI) processes including PDR, CDR, FAI, V&V. Knowledge of firmware design and control considerations for hardware interfacing with programmable blocks. Analogue design of current/voltage sensing and signal conditioning. Experience in EMC compliance and design considerations.
* Preferred: Experience with additional AC/DC topologies (e.g., flyback), 3-phase AC-DC systems, bidirectional AC/DC systems, hands-on magnetics design including losses and material properties, control loop theory for evaluating system requirements and developing control algorithms.
